What non L lens would you recommend for macro?

Putting it on a 60d body.

60mm EF-S unless you need the bit of extra working distance of the 100 EF

I cannot agree more! The EF-S 60mm is actually a 37mm lens at 1x, so it only takes 37mm of extension to get to 2x...

Canon 100 (non is). 60 is really good from what I have seen.

Also, would you go for non canon? There are many good macro lenses. Tamron 90 ( I had one) is great.

Sigma 150 is great ( I've had one for years).

The 60mm EF-S is an excellant macro lens! I bought mine 8+ years ago when I went digital to a 20D.
It is tack sharp! Best "bang" for the buck also!
I have kept it and a crop body Canon just so I can use it!

I always recommend the 180mm Macro. It is my most used lens.
Good luck!
Dan

Question for those that might have tried it: If you were to used it with an extension tube on a FF body, how's the frame coverage?

I would guess the tube helps the mirror "clear" the EF-S portion of the equation, but how are the corners? Is the image projected from far enough to cover FF?

what price range? what focal length are you thinking? I would suggest the canon 100 f2.8 usm macro or if you have more $ then the 100mm L macro.

also look at the Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro (all three versions are sharp and cheaper than the Canon 1:1 macro lens)

I have heard that Canon 100 2.8 is a very good macro lens but haven't tried that. I will try it one day

Sorry that I'm just now responding to your question -had to reload my PC. Here's a shot with the EF-S 60mm with a 12mm tube taken with a 1.3x crop camera (Canon 1D MKIII):

There won't be any coverage issues with using it on a full frame camera -the lens actually projects a large image circle on the 1.6x crop bodies.

OK, but I agree with the others, the Canon 100mm 2.8 non-L is cheap (used $350) and pretty good

60D

natural light, no tubes
