My kids are showing much interest in Photography.

I want it to look a bit like my Canon 5D, aka larger zoom , so he is interested. They seem to enjoy my Powershot G5. I would like to keep it under $200 if possible.

Is the kid just interested in looking cool, or in the actual photographic bit?
"Gear Dweeb, or Photographer? Choose now!"

In any rate, how about something like a used SX10 for $60?

Aperture and shutter priority AE, a decent screen and usable viewfinder, cheap, looks like a 'real' camera...

Or one of any number of similar cameras. It really don't matter which one.

(Edit - guess I should read the entire thread before replying... )

My grandson is 11. He is doing well with a bridge camera. It gets him used to the feel of a DSLR, and gives him a decent zoom so he can learn some composition. A 7 year old may not be ready for those things.

Now I just give her 20D with pancake lens.

I love the picture of the little girl with the 1D, great juxtaposition! On the other hand, I agree with most of the other users on a 2nd hand Rebel. It's a good progression camera to see how fast they can note the limitations and see if they can find unique ways to compensate.
