Two which I have found extremely good on the A7r:

Pentax original K 28/3.5 (corner to corner sharp by F8 and over 2/3rds of frame even at F4). It's also not that expensive.

Minolta MD 24/2.8. I just picked this lens up the other day for $60! and I'm quite impressed with it's performance. The one I have is the last version with 49mm filter thread. There is an earlier 55mm filter thread version as well that is said to also be great.

You don't give a budget or a weight consideration.

Money no object : The people who have the W.A.T.E. say it is THE best wide for the A7r. And even better it's a zoom too. $$$$$ too many to count

Money is an object but weight isn't : Zeiss 21/2.8 (but it's a heavy lens for the A7r) still one of my very best lenses, one of THE best wides and an all time classic. About $1,500-1,800 used.

Great value for the money : Another of my all time favourites, the Contax Zeiss 28/2.8. Will cost around $350 - 450 used.

Cheap & Cheerful : I saw many Olympus Zuiko 24/2.8 lens shots I loved in the A7(r) Image thread so bought one - it's a fantastic lens .. full stop. Mine cost me $250 used.

Frogfish nailed it. I'll add the Sony Zeiss 24/2, it's a very good lens and has AF with the LA-EA4 adapter. It goes for about a grand I think.

I am using it on A7r, here's a sample, full size available on flickr:

It can also be used as "sem-macro" as it focuses very close:

Perhaps the quality control has been improved on that ZA 24/2. None of the multiple copies I tried back when the lens was introduced were that great into the corners at distance even on the 24MP Sony A900 and I ended up returning them. I sort of got the impression it was not really designed for critical corner to corner sharpness at infinity but rather as a close-up "editorial" lens (in which use it performed really well).

I'd recommend the Oly 21/3.5 and CZ Distagon 28/2.8

I second both these lens

The OM 21 is a nice choice because its a good in-between focal length between an 18 and a 24, letting you go a little bit wider, and maybe not need to carry an extra ultra wide (unless you really love ultra wide shooting). When I've got only a 24 with me, I sometimes wish I could go wider, and when I've only got a 14 (or 18) it feels too wide and can be tough to compose with. I figured a 21 was a good compromise in a single lens, and a focal length I grew to enjoy with my Fuji 14mm (21mm equiv).

Its optically quite good and very small/light. I also liked the Canon 20 FDn, which is also a nice performer but a bit bigger than the OM, and my OM has better corners. The OM can share 49mm filters with the 35 and 55 FE's too.

Attached is a straight out of camera A7 jpeg from the OM 21 at f5.6 or f8 (can't remember which) Pretty decent corners for an ultra wide, with no color cast.

EDIT; this was a full resolution upload, any idea how to load those ? I know I've seen it done as usually you can click on the image and get a little magnifier tool, which then pops up another window with the full rez image

Where cost is not an issue, the WATE is amazing combination with the A7r. I have made many large prints A2 and larger and with the excellent DR it is the best WA setup I have had. The 24 Lux is really good too. Good luck with your decision

Me too. I frequently use the XF 14/2.8 R with XF 18-55 OIS (about 21mm and 28-85mm equiv AOV). OTOH, when I'm carrying heavy stuff, I often go for a TS-E 17/4L or ZE 18/3.5, with my 24-70/2.8L II zoom, or other primes. The perceptual "gap" between 18mm and 24mm is about the same as between 21mm and 28mm.

Some other options to mention:

- Sony A mount SAL20F28 20mm can be adapted with AF. It can be had for $400ish used.

- Voigtlander 20mm f3.5. It's a pancake lens for Nikon or Canon mount, which means it has no vignette issues like M lenses. Has an aperture ring and is MF. Search for Soundimageplus' blog--he uses this combo a lot, and recommends it. I went for this option.

The Voigtlander 20/3.5 is very sharp in the centre, but the SMC Pentax-M 20/4 is even better there (A and B regions). The Oly 21/3.5 is not as sharp in the central regions, but is noticeably better than both the CV 20/3.5 and SMCP-M 20/4 at the edges and corners.

I guess it really depends on what you want to shoot, how much you want to spend, and how much you want to carry. (can you say "ZE 21/2.8?)

Here's some old stuff.

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/990867/0&year=2011#9404726

Note that I said that I prefer the Voigtlander over the Oly in one of the threads. Not so much now. About fourth months ago, I decided that I prefer the SMCP-M 20/4 (better centres) over the Oly. Since then, I've been using different lenses to cover that focal length.

Talk about fickle.

Zeiss 21mm would be my first choice, but I have been very pleased with a Nikon 28mm f/2.8 AI-s I picked up recently, specifically talking about stopped down landscape shooting. While it may not be considered as strong for infinity shooting (as the CZ Distagon 28mm f/2.8 for example), it has proven itself enough that it is my bag most of the time.

Very nice.

OT - exactly how much money would you expect is left in the banking machine, after Mr. Ninja is finished digging around in there...

Anyone try the Canon 24/2.8 USM IS?

I am thinking it would be nice, especially with the OIS, for my A7.

The Canon EF 24/2.8 IS USM is a peach on EOS cameras. Can't help you with Sony cams.

Thanks, Jim!

And that's good, but he was actually buying a light rail pass, which is apparently a very frustrating experience in a costume, for both the costumed and those waiting behind him.

I had both the canon fd 24mm 2.0 and 2.8. I keep the cheaper 2.8 because it has better corners at 2.8.

I was impressed with my Konica 21/4 on my A7r.

My Nikkor 18/4 seemed to be good, need to take it out again, as I've mostly shot cars with it.

My Topcor RE 28/2.8 looks good, but I typically don't go looking in the corners all that much for problems.
