I have seen some really cool shots with the senior in the gym and you can just see where the flash lit up right around them and the bg was black or close to it. Is this just done best with speeding up the shutter and using the off camera flash? where the light just hits them and gives a dramatic effect and everything around is pretty black?? then I'm guessing darkening everything in the background in post?

When using flash a fast shutter will reduce the amount of ambient light in the image. If too fast the you will get black edges in the photo. You can increase the shutter/flash by using HSS found in many speedlights. Speed needed depends on the brightness of the room. Hope that helps.

You might try asking this in the lighting forum for more help. Also check out the strobist blog for lots of ideas. Essentially though, you'll need to be careful where you set your light, and what it can reflect on to. Get good separation from the background distance wise.

Are you using strobes or a speedlight?
