Hi to all,

this is my first time uploading pictures here.
I recently started using a Canon 6d with a Rokinon 14mm for night photography.

I have a background in Astronomy (studied Astrophysics) and pairing it with a camera is really exciting.
These are my first tries, from Mt Parnon,Greece at 1420m where star parties are held.

I will continue to upload photos as i find time to process them.
C&C are always welcomed.

Kind regards from Greece,
Evangelos

Thank you for posting your great pics Evangelos. I'd say you did pretty good for getting started. What are your settings? The best hotel in the world is one under the stars. It is also amazing how many stars a camera sensor can pick up.

nice testing.
Did you use a fog filter. Ursa Major seems prominent (which is a nice effect) but may be an illusion due to the fact is it framed in the trees very well. My closest dark skies are almost 2 hours away - enjoy yours!

Another one with the hut used by Astronomers and the Sparta Climbing assosciation, with a big bear on the roof

Canon 6d
Rokinon 14mm @2.8
30sec
6400 ISO

I did not use a fog filter, as the Rokinon 14mm does not take any filters.
I used the Starspikes Pro plugin in Photoshop to get this effect on the stars.

For this trip i travelled for 4,5h from my hometown to get this sky.
However i am about 3h trip from Pindus mountains (probably the darkest skies in South East Europe) but i don't have company to go with.

Kind regards,
Evangelos

I'm really liking the compositions you are putting together. I'm curious where you are focusing, the stars are a bit fuzzy and I was wondering if maybe it is your selected focus point.
A few things to experiment with; you might be able to to get a little bit longer exposures with the 14mm. Also, the compositions you are selecting are prime for some light painting.

All and all I like what you are doing. Just need some darker skies.

Thank you for your kind comments!

The Rokinon is a manual focus lens, and i focus on infinity.
If i understand correctly what you mean, the stars are a little fuzzy due to the fog effect i am using in Photoshop, to make the constellations pop out.

With the 14mm i can get to 36sec exposures without trailing, but i don't like to use an intervalometer right now, or install Magic lantern. So i stick with 30sec.

I have tried some light painting but i lack experience right now and i did not like my first results.
I was focused on getting some nice photos with silluetes and getting to know the camera+lens (first night out!).

The next one is with the Sundial of the Sparta Astronomy Assosciation and the Milky way.

I think if done gently like this, the fog effect works well for a sky without the milky way.
I found examples of a real fog filter were a bit too strong for me.

Great pictures! I have a very similar setup. I'm not sure if you've experience the same problem, but I noticed there's an ever so slight star trail when I leave it open for 30 seconds. It could possibly be from a slight camera shake despite my efforts to keep it stable. Do you keep the mirror lockup enabled?

You cannot escape star trailing as the Earth moves quickly.
At 30 or 36 sec it is normal to have minor trailing, but this kind of photography is not about pixel peeping.

I don't use mirror lockup, but you need to have a sturdy tripod.
I am about to order a carbon fiber Vanguard tripod, as the aluminum Manfrotto i have is a bit difficult to carry around in the night.

Two more photos from the same night.

The first one was accidentally light painted by an amateur Astronomer who was returning to the hut for the night.
The second one is the Milky Way extending over night observers with their telescopes.

Both:

C&C always welcomed!

Kind regards,
