p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 100-300l , replacement?

After talking to canon and them having them return my 100-300L (no parts ) , since it shows dust stopped down. I need to face the face I'm best off replacing the lens.

My day to day use is kids playing outdoors ; some sports , and wildlife.

Wildlife is something I want to do more of.

This is my question. With my 5dc; what lens would you recommend for outdoor use for kids playing in the park , some sports and wildlife.

Off the top my thoughts are the canon 70-300l, 100-400l or the tamron 150-600.

Sounds like you and the 100-400L were made for each other

The 70-300L is smaller, sharper, faster to focus and has better IS- but it's not 400mm, which is really the defining question. One would think that the Tamron would be unwieldy both in size and in minimum focal length for the application.

I don't for the kids or sports but for wildlife .. I would think it would be nice. Those of you who shoot birds ; is 400 mm a requirement? I have tendscy to shoot more song birds than larger birds. (But haven't done much ) Mostly because of my location.

That's why I was wondering about the tamron.

Kids you can usually get close to (I hope!), while wildlife and sports tend to keep you at a distance. Assuming you have an arrangement of shorter glass in primes or in a decent zoom, even a 24-105L, the Tammy would definitely outdo the two Canon's for utility.

In my opinion best for sports and kids in the park is the 70 300L, but best for wildlife is the 100 400L. I only had the Tamron a short time so sorry, I can't comment on how it compares to these Canon versions that I've used for years.

If I had to chose between the 2 on FF I'd grab the 100 400 or the Tamron.

I generally use 500mm+ for BIF.

My understanding of the SP 150-600mm is that it's fine for static subjects, but has issues for dynamic subjects. These issues may have been fixed by recent FW updates, but that's yet not clear to me.

IMO, the 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS is an excellent "bridge lens". Useful for a very wide range of situations, including long. If you need longer or faster at 400mm, then you're crossing the bridge.

I guess my question on the sp 160-600 is; is the af better at shorter focal lengths?

5DC has very little reach, so wildlife is tricky, 70-300L has maybe better AF for sports than the other two and is a bit crisper but for wildlife length rules, for little kids 70-300L may be enough for sports and nicest all around; for wildlife 100-400L might itself be short, heck even the 150-600 will feel short for birds (even on a 7D and 600mm I was short plenty of times, of course careful tracking and planning and sitting and waiting can help)

don;t know much about the tamron, is that a huge 300 2.8 sized lens? if so, it would be a drag for a day at the park, if it is more 100-400L sized then it's fine

Aside from possible atmospheric effects at long focal length, in some circumstances, I don't see why 'AI Servo' AF accuracy would depend on focal length, assuming you have a steady target in the finder. The many existing threads on this lens might offer some guidance.

Yes, it was sold alongside the 1DC, but only in Australia

I have two 5D (well my daughter has one of them). I also have two 6D, a 1DX, a 1DIV, and a RX100. I don't call them 5DC, 6DC, 1DXC, 1DIVC, and RX100C, and neither should you.

Maybe. I have no experience there, except with Extenders on f/2.8 and f/4 lenses.

In any case, I expect you'll be more limited by the 5D AF system (using the centre point, which is the best point) than by the lens.

tamron is around 1900g vs around 2500g for 300 2.8 IS and 1300g for 100-400L

70-300L is much lighter and smaller
