p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Lens advice

Hi all. Hoping to get some thoughts. I have to make a choice and I'm wondering:

If you had the opportunity to choose between either a 28-70 2.8l or the 24-105 F4l with a difference of $75 between the two which would you choose? The chosen lens will be for a 5d MKII. I shoot a variety of subjects and I do have a 70-200 2.8 to cover the lack of reach of the 28-70.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

In this case, with two excellent lenses, I would choose the more modern lens just on principle, but others will weigh in with nerdy details that conceivably could make a difference.

For decisions of this type, where both lenses are excellent, don't over-think it. Go with your gut and get one and get on with photography.

I'm going to flat out say that the 28-70 F2.8L is the better lens here. It's better in almost every aspect, other than it's zoom range. Besides, you have your 70-200 for the rest of the range, if needed. It's faster, sharper, and provides much less distortion.

28-70 but depends what you shoot, low light/action/portrait/indoor this is a no brainier. I try to replace my 28-70 with the 24-105 and within a week I sold the 24-105 and got me a 24-70, f4 just too slow for me but your mileage may vary.

If you plan to shoot people with it, you need f/2.8
For landscape I would choose the 24-105.

As a walk around lens I wan't the DOF control from f/2.8.

A 70mm lens at f/2.8 at 10 ft has about 12 inches of DOF, and at f/4 about 18 inches. I've always been able to back up 3 inches to achieve the same DOF. Now on the other hand I find IS much more beneficial in "getting the shot." In addition, is the 28-70mm f/2.8 L still being repaired by Canon?

the 28-70 is no longer supported by Canon so that is a factor in this. Thanks so much for the thoughts. Keep them coming.

I'd have to consider repairability. A 15 year old lens with electronic motor and aperture that can't be repaired (there are people who will work on it, but there aren't parts) . . . . it's an individual call, but if money is at all tight I'd be hesitant to buy a lens that might be a paperweight in a year or two.

The 28-70 may be the "flat-out better lens" until you consider weight and IS: 28-70L - 880g; 24-105L - 670g.

The repairability issue is also an important consideration.
