I like the darker version. I think I would clone out the light spots that are from holes in his hat. They don't add character.

Second for me too.
The light spots add interest in the second one, IMO. Too much in the first.

Processing for the structure of the hat looks pretty good, but the texture of his face seems a bit crunchy.

Spots provide subconscious target for eye IMO. There is a final version over on Black & White Vision, lighter facial features hence reduced contrast difference in spots.

FWIW, the texture of the face is nowhere near the reality - striving to retain that bit of character.

I like the darker version as well. It took me a minute to figure out what the white spots were. Then I realized it was the light coming from the hat. I think I would darken them down or clone them out. It is a great picture
