Yes. Well. I'm going to have to have a rethink about the use of x2 converters on Nikon lenses after this.

That's very good.

Very nice shots. I especially like the bald eagle shot. I have often thought about purchasing that lens. Is it sharp through the whole range? Some reviewers have reported that the lens is not that sharp. I am new to this forum so want to know what y'all think?

By the way: how do you vote or like on this forum?

IMHO I find the 200-400mm lens to be an absolutely superb lens... comparable and equal to (and perhaps better than) many of today's prime lenses. I am posting a few images that I took to show how well the lens compares to a Nikon 300mm & a 600mm prime lenses...

All photos taken with the same Nikon D800 camera body mounted on a Gitzo 5531 Carbon Fiber tripod supporting a Markins Q20 ballhead. All comparison photos were shot in RAW and Adobe Camera Raw was used to do a standard conversion to JPEG sRGB color space and downsized for display on the FM.

Interesting, and thanks for sharing. I'm not technical by any means but it looks like the 2-4 can hold its own. I especially liked the comparison b/w the 300 and 2-4. I have the 70-200, f2.8, VRII. Its my workhorse lens when shooting wildlife most of the time . . . mainly because I can handhold it for birds in flight! But I digress . . . while on a Coastal Brown Bear shoot in Alaska, a professional photog (who shoots Canon) asked me why I shoot telephoto zoom (70-200) lenses because, in his opinion, only prime lenses should be used. Also, Luminous Landscape did a review of Nikon's 200-400mm lens a few years back complaining about its lack of sharpness. And, that's why I have not committed to the purchase of this lens. Having said that, I know several who have the lens and swear by it. Andy Biggs is a huge supporter of that lens.

My copy of the 200-400 VRI (bought new in 2006) is sharp enough on the D800 for all my work :

My copy is every bit as sharp as my 500. The bokeh is maybe a tad swirlier but not enough to bother me. The zoom design is more vulnerable to atmospheric distortions than a comparable prime, but it's no big deal at normal 2-30 m shooting distances. I love the variable focal length when working with large mammals at close range!

I tried mine with the 1.4 III. Not bad. (The D7100's AF system struggled with anything that was moving though.)

A few years ago this beautiful Sandhill Crane spent the winter at a wetland nearby. Regrettably I only got off my backside and made one trip to go and photograph him/her and I've regretted it ever since.

I just moved to nikon for this lens...
I found a crazy bargain price ($3000) because it has a dent in the filter... but wait, the filter is removable and replaceable and the dent is gone...

I'm learning to use the lens and new cameras now and am definitely experiencing some growing pains...
here's a few from the past few weeks. All images are no or very minor crops from my D300

BTW, I'm loving what I'm seeing... makes me very happy to have purchased the lens!
regards,
bruce

A few more from last years trip down to Florida. The Spoonbill was memorable because I had been waiting patiently all week for him to settle when this moron started chasing him around the lagoon. Needless to say I gave him a piece of my mind.

@ Mnd1 love the details and color in the spoonbill and plover shots.
@ frdjohns the header shot is simply stunning!

These pics really show what's possible when in capable hands.

Attached are a few from Sunday morning... I'm loving the flexibility of a super-tele zoom; a real treat for someone has been using 300 f2.8's since the late 1990's!

regards,
bruce
