Oops!!!!!! After further review...that batch was with the 200 f2/TC-20E III, my apologies.
When time permits I'll add to the thread, thinkin' back...I used the 200-400 mainly for BIF

Rodolfo should be able to single handedly keep this sucker goin'

I'd like to get some input from you folks who have this lens. I am looking into longer range lenses and have the 200-400mm in mind as a consideration. On another thread, some folks mentioned that this lens lost sharpness when focusing at longer distances. Have you found this to be the case? Also, it sounds like there is some variability in sharpness (when focused at longer distances) between different copies of this lens. If you have any input or thoughts on this, I would be very interested. Thanks.

I had 2 copies (disclaimer: original version)
Mine were great thru ~ 40 yds...much over that the backgrounds
really got weird, for lack of a better word. Grasses, branches, etc.,
got kinda busy. I was one of the first "let's take off the protective
element" and see what it'll do. Never shot with it on again. Not the
best with TC's (tried 'em all) and found the AF to not quite be the
equal of the Superteles. That said, it's a fine safari/airshow/rodeo
and wildlife lens. Had many great BIF captures as well, closer in
that is. My 200 f2/TC-20E III the better fit for me (always at 400)
so we parted ways, twice. HTH

Trenchmonkey - thanks for the feedback on my questions. This is very helpful, not only for the info on IQ at distance, but also regarding use of TC's. Wish that I had unlimited funds and could get this lens and a long prime, but I suppose that just about everyone is in the same boat there.

Obviously this is an awesome lens when used well, as the photos in this thread demonstrate.

The advantage that the 200-400 gives you is that you can be at 400mm photographing a chickadee or a warbler and a Pileated Woodpecker appears right in front of you. With a prime you might get a head shot. With the 200-400 zoom out to 200 and get a full frame shot of the entire bird.

Not as sharp as a prime but not bad at all even with a 1.4TC.

Very good point, Mnd1. And, judging by some of the images in this thread, the sharpness at 400mm is pretty darn good. Incredibly impressive actually, especially for the zoom range. Thanks for your input.
