I’ve been a longtime member mostly in the BST section but wanted to change it up and share some of my wildfires at night work with you all. This work is part of a larger project called Terra Flamma: Photographing Wildfires at night.

All images on a Nikon D800e with a 24, 35, or 85 1.4 or a 17-35 AFS. The first image ran in Time Magazine in the June 1 edition.

I’d love to hear your feedback on what you think of the compositions and any additional angles or focal lengths you think might contribute to the visual variety of the images. Do you prefer shots under 60 seconds that show the stars in place, or longer exposures that are star trails?

A very interesting set. I think I like #2 the best, as the exposure and the star trails tell us it is a nighttime shot. #1 is exposed in such a way that it could have been taken in the daytime, other than all the city lights which look strange against such a bright sky to me. The third one is fascinating, but ultimately almost a little too confusing and busy for my taste. I love the creativity in that one though so perhaps a little more experimentation could yield an image with the same elements (but with less of the bright spark trails...) #2 though is an arresting image, with the fire contrasting the snow and the flames contrasting the nighttime star trails. Love it!

+1. Great stuff. Kudos on getting published by Time, too. That said, as you are specifically asking for feedback, I would try lowering exposure of n°1, which is my fave, and see what it would look like.

These are sad - but good pics and congrats on making a Time publication. I agree that #1 is exposed too bright.

The third one is crayzeee. I like it a lot. The second one I ok, but I'd clone out the blinking airplane, because it's very distracting. I like the first just the way it is, but I don't know what's that white streak just above the hills.

I think the 2nd and 3rd ones are outstanding.

1st one, there doesn't seem to be too much interesting going on in the foreground, or it is too dark to see it. The path to the left is pretty distracting too. 2nd one, definitely want to clone out the airplane if possible, then you'll have not only an outstanding image, but an outstanding fineart image.

great photography of a unfortunate event.

+1. Very sad that our state is so dessicated that the upcoming fire season is anticipated as a special event to be documented. But, if it's going to be documented, it might as well be by someone with an artist's eye, and you've certainly got it.
