p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · ALT lenses EV rules of thumb - stop down metering

I did multiple exposures a while back and figured out some rules of thumb for using P mode and stop down metering - YMMV, but it's a good starting point:

The assumption here is that you have a chip'ed adapter and it's recognizing the lens at it's widest aperture.

Leica Summicron 35mm - -1/3 EV to f/5.6 and -2/3 to -1 EV from f/5.6 upwards
Leica Summicron 90mm - -1/3 EV to f/5.6 and -1 2/3 EV from f/5.6 upwards
Zeiss T* 28mm - 1/3 EV to f/56 and -1 2/3 from f/5.6 upwards
Takumar 50mm - 2/3 EV to f/5.6 and -1 2/3 from f/5.6 upwards
Takumar 135mm - 2/3 EV to f/5.6 and -1 2/3 EV from f/5.6 upwards
Olympus Zuiko f/3.5 21mm - -2/3 EV to f/5.6 and -2 EV from f/5.6 upwards

I don't understand. Why would you not use A mode and meter like usual?

Works as well in A mode. MF lenses do have a tendency to overexpose a bit

I have not noticed this on my A7r. Wouldn't it be more camera dependent than lens dependent?

Very possibly - this is holding pretty well for all Canon APS-C DSLRs ...

Right... thats because the metering on a dslr is not done off the sensor. Its done off the viewfinder:
http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/camera_images_8/Canon/7d/vf-7d.jpg
and the light meter itself has a certain angular acceptance angle. As wider apertures allow more oblique light the light meter has to compensate for the light it can't see so it gooses the exposure. Your A7r doesn't have a light meter so much as it has the actual sensor where the metering is done.

if the OP would repeat the experiment in live view I think you will find that when the metering is done off the sensor no correction is needed.

I have too many alt lenses, and gave up trying to use the 1Ds meter. My metering alteratives: Sunny 16, histogram, blinkies, and handheld lightmeter. In the studio, I'm exposing critically, and wouldn't use TTL metering even if it worked.

Now that I have a 70D, I'll give it a try!

It is very much camera-dependent, even when comparing two models of dSLR from the same manufacturer (Canon, in my case). I know this after owning countless fully manual lenses and using them on: 300D, 1D, 10D, 20D, 30D, XTi, T1i, and several 5D.

With my 5D bodies, I have a general rule of thumb that works most of the time, but chimping the histogram is still prudent. There are many things which can trick the metering system into a bad exposure, and stop-down metering just exacerbates these issues.

I do not, however, find this to be a "problem". I dial the EC that I expect I need and usually I am pretty close. The first shot confirms it and then I can tweak 1/3rd here and there if needed.

my 50'lux-r under exposes by a full stop wide open and gradually goes to normal by f/4.

I thought with an emf chip the metering errors with the cam knowing the widest aperture would be much much less on a 5DII or III and essentially spot on wide open. I never had much luck using metering in LV and usually guess and chimp the histo. After a firmware update on the 5DII, I vaguely remember, the metering in LV with native lenses and alts was improved.

My rule of thumb for setting exposure with Alt lenses is to use RAW and check the histogram.

Yep, I even use the histo on my P&S for LF work.
