So, what's your opinion of the corners at 16mm stopped down? Especially in comparison to 17-40 @ 17mm & 16-35 II @ 16mm?
not quite sure yet, never tried the 16-35 II, I hope to manage to compare it to a 16-35 II this weekend. It's been ages since I used a 17-40L and I had used it only aps-c. I think it does better compared to some online stuff i've seen over the years. Hopefully I get a hand on a test 16-35 II this weekend and then I can see for sure.
for flat targets I think it can manage sharp corners at 16mm stopped down just a trace easily enough, for complex, real world with thick DOF needed, not as sure, trickiest as always are scenes where you have some near bottom corners on the ground and yet you want stuff farther away in focus center and upper center frame, f/8 seems to do it except for extreme corners at 24mm, maybe not at 16mm. f/6.3 even for extreme corners at 35mm. OTOH for something like focusing on the edge of woods with no near ground in frame, aimed high enough that it's all trees, it can be close to corner to corner at almost even at just f/4 wide open and 24mm.
need to test more, didn't do too much, it's tricky when you do complex real world scenes, since some have tricky DOF
