Exciting lens! Canon's delivering more hits than misses lately (past few years), hope the trend continues - I love dSLR competition =)

Images stabilize may not be that great because of wide-angles lens, IS can't really do that much, the effect is very minimal because of the wide-angles lens.
I really hope that this 16-35mm F4 IS is much shaper than 17-40 and equal or better than 16-35mm L II in sharpness
comparison.

Yeah, it seems like it helps me only about almost 2/3rds (more than 1/3, but not always 2/3rds) of a stop at 16mm and about a touch over 1 stop at 35mm. Maybe call it 1/2+ stop at 16mm and 2/3rds+ of a stop at 24mm and 1+ stop at 35mm?

While my 100mm L macro seems to help me as much as 2 and 2/3rds of a stop (far away from macro range, definitely less than that at 1:1 for sure).

And 70-300L about 2 to 2 and 1/3rd stops.

My feeling is that the lens has peak FF corner to corner performance at 35mm and then the corners and eventually edges slowly slide off the wider and wider you go and you need to stop down more and more to get corner to corner. It does corner to corner crisply more easily with a totally flat target.

Each lens is different. The 24-70 II has the worst corners at the long end and probably the best somewhere around 24mm-35mm range. Sort of close to the opposite of the 16-35 IS behavior. OTOH the 24-70 f/4 IS had best corner to corner performance at 24mm and 70mm and the worst in the middle at 50mm. And the 24-105L, from what I recall, I think had best corner to corner performance at the middle around 50mm and then worse at the short and long ends.

Very rough impression NOT carefully tested is that it has the least lateral CA at 35mm and the most at 16mm and same for longitudinal (of which is is VERY free, only near 16mm does it start appearing just a bit more, overall it fights it off very well, about as well as any wider type lens zoom or prime).

As for distortion it appears to be EXCEPTIONALLY low for zoom at 24mm and probably same for 35mm, at 16mm it definitely has distortion, not sure at what point it starts appearing, at 24mm it has MUCH less than the fabled 24-70 II and less than even the 24-70 f/4 IS, I bet it's near the 24 1.4 II! So it's certainly some decent bit below 24mm where distortion starts appearing. EDIT: then again, I guess for the UWA zoom it's typical that they are relatively low distortion at the mid-range, the 16-35 II is also very low at 24mm and 17-40 not too bad. But it, they, do deliver a lot less distortion at 24mm than any of the 24-70/105 zooms (with the tamron 24-70 VC and 24-105 worst and the 24-70 f/4 IS best and 24-70 II intermediate for those lenses).

So, what's your opinion of the corners at 16mm stopped down? Especially in comparison to 17-40 @ 17mm & 16-35 II @ 16mm?

not quite sure yet, never tried the 16-35 II, I hope to manage to compare it to a 16-35 II this weekend. It's been ages since I used a 17-40L and I had used it only aps-c. I think it does better compared to some online stuff i've seen over the years. Hopefully I get a hand on a test 16-35 II this weekend and then I can see for sure.

for flat targets I think it can manage sharp corners at 16mm stopped down just a trace easily enough, for complex, real world with thick DOF needed, not as sure, trickiest as always are scenes where you have some near bottom corners on the ground and yet you want stuff farther away in focus center and upper center frame, f/8 seems to do it except for extreme corners at 24mm, maybe not at 16mm. f/6.3 even for extreme corners at 35mm. OTOH for something like focusing on the edge of woods with no near ground in frame, aimed high enough that it's all trees, it can be close to corner to corner at almost even at just f/4 wide open and 24mm.

need to test more, didn't do too much, it's tricky when you do complex real world scenes, since some have tricky DOF

Cheers, appreciate it. Will keep an eye out if you get a chance, have to decide if I keep my recently purchased 2.8 or return it for the f4.

I picked up my copy yesterday. Unfortunately it was raining most of the day where I was so I only managed to grab a few snapshots between showers, but my initial impression is "WOW!". This lens is easily the best Canon-mount wide zoom I've ever used, and I near-distance corner sharpness seems to be on par with the Nikon 14-24 f2.8G (which I no longer own).

The other thing I noticed is that the IS is almost totally silent in operation. There's an audible click when it activates, but that's it...

My friend got his yesterday. Awesome lens. As olson said, the IS is really silent. But over all, great lens. I can upload pics of it if anyone is interested

I should add that it is complex though, as for a close, flat target the 24-70 II makes 70mm easier for corners than 24mm at times and yet for a more distant scene in real world it might get 24mm corners more easily than 70mm and certainly does relatively better compared to other lenses at 24mm than at 70mm for far edges.

It seems like for a very close, flat target it does corner to corner sharp on FF from f/4 at 35mm, maybe f/5 at 28mm, maybe f/9 at 16mm. For real world scenes 16mm might need, at times, f/10 or f/11 I think.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-16-35mm-f-4-L-IS-USM-Lens.aspx

TDP has the full review up now.

Once again, his results don't match mine, not sure if it is procedure or lens copy variation. He seems to get the corners sharp more easily on the wide side than the long with a close, flat target, while I get absolutely for 100% sure the exact opposite results. I was getting deep corner crisp at 35mm with a close, flat target, easily even at f/4 but at 16mm it was more like f/9 for that. For whatever reason, he seemed to show the 35mm end struggling for corner performance and even at f/8 not fully sharp. Weird. But he seemed to get the wide end corner crisp relatively easily.

For whatever reasons, my own experiences, overall, most often match photozone.de test results. My own results match TDP much less often and even more when it comes to DxO.

The test charts are often too small.
If the field reasonably flat over the entire 16-35 range at landscape distances?
