p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sony a7R + new Canon 16-35 F/4 IS + Metabones IV

Below is a sample I took today at 16mm f/11 on the new F/4 IS adapted to my Sony a7r. Shot in Raw, converted in LR5 with no post other than Sharpening 70 Radius 0.8.

So far, I am pleased with the lens vs. my Canon 17-40. It's bigger than the 17-40 but very light for it's size. The IS is a great addition making this an awesome hiking lens. the crops below are from the extreme corners of the frame.

Until Sony / Zeiss puts out a decent Native WA Zoom, this will be my new walk around landscape lens.

Is it necessary to stop down to f/11 for decent edge performance? Just wondering...
I have the 16-35/2.8 II and have never really been happy with its technical performance.

Very impressive corner sharpness. I think it could have done better though. F/11 is probably not the optimum aperture on your A7R in terms of sharpness because of diffraction.

I normally shoot landscape b/w f/8-f/16. I found the corners are sharp even at f/5.6. I did not test f/4 yet.

OK, thanks. Good to know. The early samples released by Canon were quite disappointing in the corners/edges at f/8 and wider...

Is it just me or does the top left corner just look like mush?

I would really like some images at f/8 or f/11, in these samples I am not sure whether the lens is a little worse than I had hoped for or if the corners are simply a little out of focus

Mush might be a little dramatic. But it definitely has that UWA extreme-corner smeariness. The question is what beats it right now?

Impossible to know just by looking at one sample image, but one suggestion that might beat it is the Nikon 18-35mm G.

I got my 16-35 f/4 IS yesterday, and even on 5Dii it looks better @f/8 than @f/11. Also, I'm not getting the kind of CA I see in that sample. No purple anywhere, and I shot a lot up into the tree branches on a cloudy bright day looking for it, too. It's almost spooky.

The corners seem to be picky about where you focus it.

Sorry for the non Alt post, but I think for comparative discussion it is allowed. To me, Canon lenses on a 5D feel Alt

Like most Canon wide angles, this lens is not showing very well on a high resolution sensor.

+1

You should see the corners on the FE Zeiss 24-70 at 24mm that I returned. Like an impressionest painting!

I shot the 16-35/4 IS L tonight on the A7r. From preliminary inspection it looks good. I didn't shoot it as a pixel peeper, i shot it as a shooter. Ill process the images tomorrow and get back to everyone

Edit: one thing I can say upfront is that what ever coating they put on the front of this thing is really good. I was shooting in a ton of salt spray and it wiped off clean. With minimal effort. Very nice

I'd love to see the Nikon 14-24 corners on the A7r.

I did not see a noticable improvment over the MkIII. That is to say is is still too slow for anything but static objects. It does lock fairly consistently though.

I would too- Nikon has a truly unique lens in the 14-24, and one that I doubt anyone else will try to produce a competitor for, since AF isn't necessary for most of the uses of that lens, and aperture is easily controlled through an adapter, even on Canon bodies.
