My main photo drive is a 2TB WD Caviar Black FZEX - it was backed up to an internal 2TB FAEX, and other externals. But last week the FAEX started acting strangely so I went and bought another FZEX in order to have the FZEX's as RAID 1 under Windows 7.

I couldn't use the FZEX and FAEX in RAID 1 because Win 7 needs them to be identical drives, hence 2x FZEX drives.

It is nice to know that upon import files are written immediately to two separate physical drives - as well as making a second copy via LR to a junk drive that is cleaned out periodically.

The advantage is obvious, but don't stop making the regular backups.
Apart from dying spontaneously, everything that is done to one of your RAID 1 drives will happen to the other, including viruses, accidental deletions, etc.

RAID is not backup. Delete or overwrite a file on one drive the same thing happens to the second drive. Here is a short blog post about the subject that I wrote recently:

Raid is Not Backup

RAID 1 certainly is not - as for deleting a file on one drive and the same thing happening - that's the whole idea.

That's why I set it up.
