I just received the camera today via amazon and will be ready to use it this weekend.

I'm looking for a protective filter for the front element. Does anyone have any recommendations for a protective UV filter for the Sony RX100 III ?

Not sure why you need a protective filter ?. You are using it as a hammer aren't you ? .

The lens retracts into the body when powered off, so shouldn't really need a filter

If your shooting at the beach or something a mag filter attachment ring, and then basically any halfway decent 49mm UV filter should work fine. They all do the same thing.

Hardly something I'd walk around with all the time on the camera though

ACR has a bug in processing ARW files that is known.

I preordered mine a month ago from Sony's website and finally got it in the mail this morning from FedEx. It shipped Thursday so Sony pulled off two day shipping. I previously owned the RX100 and skipped the Mark II. I didn't think it could get any better but Sony has done it again. I've only played with the camera for a day but the pop up EVF is crystal clear and really helps stabilize the camera. The flip up screen is nice for those of us in the "selfie generation." The lens is fast and IQ is amazing as expected.

Mine should hopefully arrive tomorrow.

Of the inititial reviews, lens complaints aren't something I've been seeing, so fingers crossed that is a good sign

With the mkI, there were a ton of post about decentering issues from day 1........

I asked on the dpreview forums how effective the image stabilization is - on the RX100/RX100M2 it's essentially non-existent. Several have reported that it works very well on the RX100M3.

Agreed, I can't even tell a difference with it on/off on my MKi, at least for stills

Reports seem to be showing a pretty good improvement for stills, and accounts suggest the active stabilization with video is nothing short of amazing, though at the expense of some additional image cropping.

I don't do much video, but one of those reasons is that I always rather hate watching shakey footage when I get back home. Makes me start to feel sick pretty easily lol.

I know way too little about video to tell differences in codec's and such, but if I can shoot handheld and actually get a semi-stable bit of footage, I could see myself really starting to do more video

I downloaded the samples from dprv and looked through my Mac retina screen. I think JPEG quality has been improved, AWB and skin tone are much better than those from v.1. I think the new lens is really sharp too.

But is it overpriced If it were sold in $500s range, I wouldn't hesitate. I think I wait for new Fuji's 1-inch-sensor camera.

Surely your Mac w/ retina display wasn't a value priced item either

The forthcoming Panasonic LX8 will likely be priced aggressively against the RX100M3.

Dpreview RX100 MkIII Review Summary:

The RX100 III is the most capable compact camera we've ever seen. With its built-in viewfinder and more consistently fast lens, there's nothing that can provide better image quality in such a small package. It's not the perfect camera to take shot-to-shot control over, but its capability means it justifies its high price tag.

Fuji X20 with its 2/3" sensor was introduced at $600 compared to the RX100 Mark 1 at $650. I doubt that a 1-inch sensor camera from Fuji will be much cheaper than RX100 MkIII.

The same goes for this new M3 version. I've already seen complaints about decentered lenses. But oh well... sadly that's exactly what I expected from Sony.
