Love this new lens on my D610, but I am frequently seeing chromatic aberration as purple fringes in high contrast regions (like tree branches against bright sky, or fill-flash reflections in subject's eyes). This is most noticeable at f/1.4, but see it on other smaller f-stops as well.

Lightroom removes with a single click, but curious if this is normal/typical for this somewhat pricey lens.

Thx for any advice

That's pretty normal for just about any fast lens especially f1.4 lenses. Some control it better than others but that's what the software correction is for. Keep in mind these are shooting extreme's. Just about any lens will exhibit this in very high contrast situations like thus.

Yup; even kit lenses do this at relatively tiny apertures. And as fast 35mm lenses aren't easy to make, compromises have to be made. In this case, especially on Nikon, you might try renting the Sigma 35/1.4 Art to see how it compares to your usage. The Sigma will be sharper and likely better corrected for the artifacts that you're seeing. Note that the AF may or may not be cooperative, and that you may or may not prefer the rendering over the Nikon, but as evidenced by just the shots in this forum, it's definitely worth a look!

In general, chromatic aberration or not, tree branches against an overexposed sky makes for really crappy photographs and is best avoided no matter how perfect the lens.

While true, the OP did say 'bright', not 'over-exposed'. Many good and great lenses can handle this situation pretty well, and I find that this situation is pretty common in landscapes and in some environmental portraits, especially when using a wide-angle lens like the OP.

The Sigma has plenty of CA too wide open. Compare the reviews.

No doubt, but it's also the op's only alternative, and it is a better optic overall .

It may be sharper but "better overall" is pretty subjective. Lot's of factors in "overall". The OP has a very good lens, he just needs to understand the limitations of shooting wide open better.

No doubt "operator error" is at play here.

Though, I had not seen this effect to this degree on any of my older (albeit slower) and cheaper lenses when ~wide open.

I was curious to know if this was "normal" for this lens, especially at this price point. From the helpful comments above, seems to be normal. Sounds like I need to stop down a bit when I expect this scenario, or just remove in Lightroom.

Thanks all.

I would like to have that lens but I won't mind the CA - it's minimal.

It's normal for "any" f/1.4 lens.
