Just a quick question: I was walking thru Sam's Club yesterday and they had a D7100 there on display. I had never seen one before. I liked the fell but noticed that unlike my old D300 it didn't have 3 modes of focus. It didn't have the continuous focus that I have used in the D300. Is that feature available in menu or have they eliminated that feature to save money. I won't buy a camera without it. Looking to upgrade but the D7100 might not be the answer.

Thanks again for all the input on the 70-200n2.8. Love it, but wish I had not waited so long.

Looking at the body, the lower left (of mount) has the AF/M switch.
Pressing the white dot opens up your focus options, just like on the
D7K that preceded it.

In other words, yes.
A, C, S

I find the 70-200mm f/2.8 a killer lens on this body by the way... One of my best, and it's a VR1.

Actually Nikon's new control layout for AF is a big improvement in my view; no more fiddling around with that switch unless you're using a non-AFS autofocus lens. The D7100 control is the same as on the D7000, D3/D4, D600/610 and D800. You press the little button in the middle of the switch and turn the back flywheel on the right side of the camera to access one bank of settings (single shot, continuous, auto) and the front flywheel to access the other (single, d9, d21, d51 or 39 depending on your camera, Auto, and if you've got a D4s Group Area); and, if you're using the single (single or continuous shooting) or the d9 or d21 mode (continuous only), you use the Nintendo pad on the back to move the selection to where you want it.

As a previous owner of a D300, the D7100 has been, for me, an upgrade in AF in every way.

Thanks to all.
Just waiting to pay off the 70-200 and then on to the 7100 [if my wife say "Yes"]. Maybe I'll tell her Trenchmonkey said to buy it.

Hey now!! I'd recommend the D7K and buy her a new pair shoes/dress with the savings.

BTW, the little button is black and located in the pivot of the toggle.

sorry..I just had to chuckle at this....if they eliminated it to save money I doubt they would have even sold a single one

I'm with trenchmonkey on this one - Save your money and go with a D7k. The files are much nicer out of the D7k than the D7100. Sold my D7k last year and bought a D7100. Looking to go back to a D7k again to partner my D800. The D7100's images lack something, which I can't quite put my finger on.

Will rolled his D7100 and still keeps a D7k around. If the D7100 offered significant advantages, he would have kept it.

Where does one find a D7000? B/H is out.

D7100 AF is quite impressive. IMO, the AF of the 7100 blows the D7k's AF out of the water in every measurable way.

Not necessarily. The REAL question is, "Which would you rather have as your only camera: D7000 or D7100." For a guy who seems to have every Nikon ever made this question doesn't come up. The D7100 very clearly has a better AF. It's faster, more reliable to lock on, and will even focus by moonlight! It's better sealed than the D7000 too, something important to me as I head out at night into the Dakota blizzards. That's not a factor for Will. The extra pixels give you the option of cleaner cropping, if you used a tripod. While the image quality from the cameras is similar, there's enough other advances to call the camera a noticeable upgrade. If better AF performance and more options to crop aren't important to you, that may be moot though.

I think Will is the exception to the rule, he shoots jpegs exclusively I believe, and does so that he makes people like myself reconsider having to spend the time on the pc making adjustments. For RAW processing, the stated perception of the 7100 files being not as pleasing as the 7K can be adjusted. I may be wrong here but that's how I see it. All I know is I wish my 610 had the 7100 AF but as George Carlin said "You can't have everything, where would you put it? "

To answer your question, the D7000 has been discontinued for a couple years. SO, if you want one, look at Nikon refurbished units at Adorama or Cameta Camera, or buy one from the buy and sell here at FM.

Personally, I'm very happy with my D7100.
At this stage I go forward, not backward.
(Although, I'll probably sell it and my D800e when the new D810 body comes out...)

That's exactly right. The files with that Toshiba sensor are NOT as good as the D7K's Sony sensor...SOOC.
Turned mine after ~3000 clicks. Wasn't thrilled with the wonky AF using TC-14E II's on Nikkor Superteles either.

^I'll second that - odd behavior with 300f4+ TC combo, not seen on D800 or D7000 with same combo.
