p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D3200 exp compensation not working

I just got a couple d3200s for a remote photography project. I'm using them with YN 622 flash triggers and sb 700s. I can't get exposure compensation to work-- I dial it in using the menu interface, it registers in the live view preview, but the picture has neutral exposure--way brighter than the live view preview. The display reads the desired exp compensation, -2ev, but something is overriding it. Any ideas? I'm shooting in Aperture priority, ISO 200 with autoiso on, f8.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Are you trying to adjust ambient exposure or the flash exposure? Perhaps you're intending one but selecting the other?

I'm definitely dialing the exposure compensation without the lightning bolt/flash icon, and I can see the live view preview getting darker as I dial it in. Thanks.

Try with auto-iso off.

live view is misleading as well.

F8 if using it indoors is very dark without flash - didn't make it clear if you were firing the speedlights.

Are you shooting with a tripod? Using spot metering? Eval?

Need to start eliminating where the cause is. So to start...

Take a picture without the flashes and see if the exposure is changing when you go from EV0 to EV -2

Turn auto ISO off.
Change to manual, so set your speed and aperture.

If exposure doesn't change you know it's in your settings.

If the pic is changing exposure , it's in your flash settings. They might be trying to compensate for the lack of light.

Thanks for feedback. I'm shooting at 12mm in the forest, lighting the foreground. The camera is out in the field, so can't test quite yet. I'm only lighting a small part of the scene. I'm not sure what metering I was using, matrix maybe. What really stumps me is that I can dial it down to -3 and see live view get very dark, near black but the pic is bright. That makes it seem like something is overriding the exp comp I set.

Thanks

Your flash is compensating. Dial in the flash compensation.
