If you shot those in RAW I would do some processing on them.

Process them for sharpness and then use some noise reduction everywhere but the faces, they have gone a bit plastic IMHO.

the 6D high ISO is astonishing though and the 70-300IS holds it's own

Unfortunately no amount of sharpening would help, since the faces are OOF and/or have motion blur...

No you are right they are not particularly sharp, but the NR has made them look even worse IMO, still not bad for such incredible ISO's though

Well, the shot of Judy definitely has some motion blur, but so what. They're both American musical icons. The shot of Don is really just front focused just a tad from his face. Look at the mic and mic stand, as well as the guitar. They are actually quite sharp, but the depth of field and/or some slight movement of his face, but it looks more like depth of field, and he's not as crisp as the rest.

I love that, when asked what American Pie means to him, he answered that it means he never has to work again. It also affords him his very cool hobby of perusing music stores in Europe and buying up as many vintage Martins as he can to return them, rightfully (in his terms) to the country of their birth. Note they are both playing Martins.

Exactly. This is the type of situation where a f2.8 zoom is worth its weight in gold. Would have allowed much higher shutter speeds.

Nonetheless the 6D proves itself an excellent high iso performer.

The high ISO performance is what I'm attempting to convey here. It's astonishing!

My Tamron 28-70 f/2.8 would not have brought me so close. Neither would my Canon 70-200 f/4

I sacrificed sharpness for closeness. PLUS - long lenses were not permitted, so I had to rush the shots on the sneak .....If I was able to take my time the 70-300 (non L) would have really shined. I'm liking that lens more and more every day.

I think most of us already know how good the high ISO is on the most recent FF Canon cameras, but IMO this thread shows that limitations/sacrifice and excution are factors to always keep in mind.

I think that's a little harsh.

These shots were from 25 feet away with a (good) consumer zoom at SIX THOUSAND and TWELVE THOUSAND ISO

They are not quite in focus but with processing they could look better and they do the job for the OP.

Trying to shoot this in film (as I did professionally many many times) would be almost impossible in that light, the results wouldn't be anywhere near as good.

No, the lens isn't a big fast white L but the job is very good considering

Thanks for that dhphoto....

Also, please note that I did not post this in the 'critique' forum. I merely wanted to share the legends 'close-up'

I processed them to the best of 'my' ability, which could be better...If you think they look like plastic now, you should have seen what they looked like pre-noise reduction. They looked grainy. I preferred the smoother plastic look.

I'm going to try reprocessing .......but remember, I couldn't 'nail' the focus for fear of being caught with a camera, they were moving and the ISOs were nearly maxed out! Not too mention the $300 lens!

Judy looks good, in my opinion. She looks like I imagined she'd look at 75. She is and was a lovely lady. I don't care if these photos are technically good; I enjoyed them.

I wasn't looking for technically good pics when I shot these. I snuck the photos!

I wanted to share the experience, that's all.

I don't really consider ISO 6400 very high these days, there have been very capable bodies in the past that could do ISO 6400.

I think this really shows that you need to go to higher ISOs to stop motion blur, and then learn some various tricks for managing very high ISO shots. Great shots for the memory though, and sometimes that is all that matters with a photo.

If you have any raws you could share from that, I will run them through custom actions I have developed across a variety of bodies for high ISO shots. I would love to see if I could give you some better results for your collection.

For example, 5D3 at 25600 can be cleaned up pretty well, the 6D even better.
