I love everything about the idea of this combo. A compact normal with f1.4. Manual focus with a big, bright EVF.

But has anyone done it? Or put this lens in front of any modern, full frame digital sensor? My only concern is if I'll be disappointed with optical performance at f2, particularly sharpness. Anyone willing to send me a high-res sample at around f2?

It's an awesome lens on the A7. small, light, and quite sharp! I used it mainly for BW's, but I know few people who still use it. Here are some examples...It has nice 3D pop, but some don't like the bokeh, but I did! Mine was the Classic, btw.

thank you! do you recall the aperture for the girl on the bench and the shopping cart at the end? do you find yourself often thinking, "I better stop this down a bit to get it sharp"?

All were taken WO at 1.4, except the shot of Gio playing Jenga. That was 2.8

You were smart to ask about it at f/2. F/1.4 is fairly hazy and vignettes a LOT. In a way, it was odd to design the lens this way. It's amazingly tiny. They could've made it a little bigger (and therefore better at f/1.4) and still had a really small lens. Or they could've made it f/2 and either (a) incredibly good or (b) even tinier. That said, it's a great little lens at f/2 or smaller.

(PS - As great a fit for my A7 as this lens is, my fingers are just too fat for its small size (or any tab-focusing lens, really), so I've got a pristine one for sale : https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1281702)

Some (full size) samples I did the other day on the A7 for a buddy (the aperture series is particularly useful, I think):

Thank you! great feedback, and the high res samples are very helpful.

Its a pretty good combo, nice size, pretty good optics, speed is a nice alternative to something sharper, but slower like a 35/2.8 FE, and with a very different look/rendering from Zeiss

Biggest complaint I had was the focus tab just didn't fall under my finger very well. Would of loved to have had a proper focus ring

Agree with what Gregg said.. f/1.4 is really usable but by f/2 is more than adequate for my if I do my part (nail the focus)

Here's one WO with the A7

It's nice if you don't mind the terrible midzone resolution dip. Completely useless for flat surfaces if you don't stop down to f/8 or so. In the middle it's nice and sharp straight from f/1.4.
I got rid of mine very quickly.

I love this lens on the a7. Mainly because it's the only lens I currently own for it

I'm also considering the 75 1.8

Here is my contribution at 1.4. Minor color edits in LR and sharpening bumped up to 50 (25 is the base LR adjustment)

I agree with Makten.....very sharp dead center starting at f/1.4 with a dip in the midzone....but with a little overall glow to it. At f/2 it is extremely sharp with no glow. The rendering is unique, which gives this lens character. I have the classic, which is what I wanted for low contrast b/w portraits. If you want an extremely sharp planar lens, this is not it

Thanks a lot for the examples...

So am I to understand that this lens is very usable -- sharp, no distortion, high IQ -- at f/2ish, maybe 2.8 and beyond? I don't like to shoot wide open on lenses like these anyway so this may be a great choice if I go with an A7.
