Hi,

I m David from Barcelona,

I use a nikon d800E with 24-70 ,but usually mount my zeiss ZF2 all the time.
I am between this classic leica vario 80-200 with new leitax moutn , that avoid the stop down. I m in due for zeiss 100mp.

My first priority is IQ in general terms. I believed leica was over IQ quality, but last information says new zeiss zf2 has better microcontras and easy focus use.

Somebody who had shot with both can share with me the experience?

Which one do I chose?

thanks

They are very different lenses. I have the Zeiss and like it a lot. It is great for close ups an for portraits and it is very sharp from wide open across the frame. In my view it has just one weakness, the bokeh (or blur) outside the focus plane has chromatic aberrations (sometimes called colour fringing).

The Leica is no doubt a great lens, but it is a zoom with a much narrower maximum aperture. It also won't allow the close up performance of the Zeiss. You will, however, have a lot more flexibility in framing the subject (that is why a lot of people prefer zooms).

So to me the question comes down to whether you want an excellent prime lens that does close ups very well, or whether you want an excellent zoom lens.

I undestrand. ZF2 wins in IQ terms. But a zoom provides flexible mode shot. I don t particulary like the zoom use. I have 80% all of my photos by fix lens.

The 80-200 is a very good zoom ,even better 70-200 VRII nikon version (?Ώ), but not as like a fix suprem 100mp zf2.

Maybe I go for ZEISS!!!!

If I get 100mp I would feel satisfied about ZF2 series. 35 1,4 50mp and 100mp. It all I need. I think the misty red dot harsh my subconscient taste and I ve wanted one since ever.

(apologies for my english, isn t my mattern lenguage ,all of you ve guess it,yet.)

thanks

The better comparison might be with Leica's APO Macro 100/2.8, or, if close focus isn't necessary, an APO Asph 90/2, though I haven't used either.

Cheers,
Jon

I would agree with Jon - the better comparison is with the Leica 100 APO.

I used both the Zeiss 100MP and Leica 100 on a D800E. The Leica was the winner for me. Both are superlative lenses but the Leica's color is out of world. Sharpness is probably a tie with both lenses performing great close, mid and infinity. I kept the Leica and sold the zeiss.

Great information, even if its tasted just in my same machine.

Now I have a buy option for the same amount in zeiss and leica zoom, I look for 100 apo.

thanks

(I like much this forum for this kind of information. In Spain are more centered in Canon/Leica/Sony…)

I have the Leica R 100mm f2.8 Apo-Macro-Elmarit and the Leica R 80-200mm f4 Vario Elmar Zoom lens. I have not had the Zeiss 100mm macro or the 135mm Apo lenses. Both lenses produce excellent color. The Leica R 80-200mm f4 Vario Elmar lens is very nice and sharp with a lot of flexibility. But I have found it happier on a tripod especially with my Sony A7r. The Leica R 100mm f2.8 Apo-Macro-Elmarit is a superb optic, extremely sharp and a great performer for 1/2 life size to basically infinity. There is a very expensive Leica 1:2 to 1:1 Elpro available for the lens which is a superb performer, but a Leica 2X Apo extender may perform about as well but you must stop the lens down at least 1 stop for best performance. If you have/can afford the lens with both the Elpro and the 2X Apo extender you can have magnifications potentially to 2X and either a 100mm or 200mm lens equivalent. The 100mm Apo has a very long helicoid from 1:2 to infinity, but for normal distances it is not bad. The lens is happier on a tripod especially with the Sony A7r. Whenever possible, this lens is in my camera bag when I am out and about taking photos with my A7r.

this might be an interesting comparison.

Personally I prefer the Zeiss color. It seems more natural to me.

It s an important poitn. My d800E is base on same free filter AA sensor ,like a7r. I think so.
But I m used to shot by hand, not tripod and heavy gears on my usual performance. I guess zeiss doesn t need a tripod tandem work.
I like more the colour s leica on screen photos seen, but maybe zeiss is more practical.

The post is named 80-200 against Zeiss 100mp ,not to be the most logical comparation, is for the real inlife option I ve got,of course.

I have enaugh info to take an option.

Thanks , your help has been values.

Here's a handheld shot with the D800e + Leica 100 APO

Leica vs Zeiss color is a personal choice. Having shots hundreds of images with both lenses I almost always prefer the color fidelity of the Leica.

well I decided finally for leica R 100 apo. I think zeiss 100mp is quite better than 80-200 f4. But I undestand leica 100 apo is better than 100mp ,in color rendition and something else. Maybe something magic.

I hope so,for leica import.

You can guess are guilty boys for this decision. I m conviced about your info this would be the wright decision , but not most cheap...

I m dare on leica r.

Great choice. Definitely a lens I would like to try that lens some time.

I would recommend to buy a Leitax mount for the lens to mount it to your D800E most securely, and for optimum performance: http://leitax.com/leica-lens-for-nikon-cameras.html

Mount replacement instructions are on the side:

Definitely a great lens - I don't think you can go wrong with a choice of either Leica or Zeiss. Did you see this Macro comparison ?

Leitax is made by David Llado here in Barcelona. Now there is new leitax mounts that alow avoid stop down method. It s faster shot old lens. Even is going to go out a new mount with 10 holes. Now 2 cam and 3 cam are compatible on nikon.

In my area nobody has leica r 100 apo. I must ask for in foreign forum .
The review says zeiss is a little better, ups . I could buy a zeiss 100mp ZF for 900€ and the leica will cost with leitax 1900€…

I have had 4 zeiss zf2 yet, probably I wanted choose a leica and descover why is so famous. I dared/payed.

I ll post photos 100apo/E

thanks

The differences in the review may be on an individual lens basis and not necessarily indicative of the performance of a lens that you may purchase. Leica lenses may well be more consistent from sample to sample though as compared to those manufactured for Zeiss under the Zeiss badge.

I've owned both. I used the Leica on the R9/DMR combo, as well as on Canon 1ds mk III and 5dmk2. I sold it a few years ago after Leica abandoned the R line. Even the sensor for those previous generous Canon cameras were a challenge for the Leica Vario-Elmar to perform optimally well. I still own the Zeiss MP (as well as the Leica 100 macro-elmar), and see no need to get rid of it. I actually really like that lens. If you are only concerned about image quality, then the Zeiss MP will win hands down. The Leica Vario is still a zoom, and frankly, not a terribly modern one. Although the size and mechanical build quality are both to be highly praised, it's probably no better IQ-wise than whatever flavor of the month 70--200 or 80-200 pro level zoom lens is available from Canon, Nikon or even Sigma.

Hope this is helpful.
