p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Question about the new 16-35/4 IS L design

I was reading the Canon Camera Museum entry on the new 16-35/4 IS L lens and noticed something on the lens diagram that intrigued me. The lens has two lens "diaphragms". Does this mean two physical apertures that open and close when shooting? If so, what are the advantages of a design like this?
