Can somebody recommend an 85mm lens with IS? I know there are good ones without IS, but I'm getting older and am not as steady as I was 20 years ago, so IS would be great.

there isn't one I am aware of from any manufacturer for canon ef mount. There is the 100/2.8 macro with IS

The closest would be the Tamron 90/2.8 macro VC. If you need a faster lens an option may be a Sony camera with IBIS.

There has been a persistent rumor that Canon may update the current 50 and 85 like they did with the 24, 28 and 35. All of which have IS. So there may be an 85 with IS in the future. At or close to 85, I have five lenses with IS: 24-105 L, 70-200 2.8 II L, 70-200 4 L, 70-300 L and 100 2.8 L. Depending on your body, some of the new IS STM zooms in the EF-S mount are pretty light, sharp and inexpensive. I guess it comes down to your intended usage.

70-200 2.8L IS II has 85 in the zoom range and at 2.8 with is. It's an incredible lens, highly recommended along with the 100 2.8L IS which is your next best bet in my opinion.

In the past, some very knowledgeable FM members have stated that it would be quite hard to fit an IS element in the 85L, as there is not much space available in there.
So I guess that would require a larger lens with a much different optical formula.

I too started to run into this issue a few years ago (I'm 65) and started a more vigorous exercise program and completely eliminated caffeine and and cut back on sugar and my hands are rock solid now. You don't always have to accept status quo.

Can you expand on the exercises you did? I'd be interested in trying your strategy

I decided not to accept all the things that are "supposed" to be associated with my age. You know, weight gain, aches and pains, declining vision, unsteady hands, etc. I stared doing cardio, walking a few miles on most days, playing softball (most others on the team are half my age) things that help with overall well-being. I've drastically reduced refined foods in my diet also. The results are that I've lost 30 lbs, my hands are steady, I don't need glasses anymore and I can thoroughly enjoy life, my 15 grandkids, my wife of 45 years, and my lifelong interest in photography again. Life is good!

Canon has always offered IS, in a wide range of weights and prices. The only requirement was that it had to be a zoom, a zoom, or a zoom.

Prior to 2009, there was no Canon prime with IS, shorter than 300mm, that cost less than $5500 (think Canon 200 f2L IS). When the 100L IS macro was offered, I leaped on it the first month. Then, when Canon offered the lightweight 24, 28, and 35mm IS primes, I bought the 28.

Now I think the main missing (affordable) primes that need IS are the 50mm, 135mm and 200mm, with especially the 50mm crying out for IS.

I love the IS in faster primes for international travel, because I can use them in low light without needing a tripod.

Would also love to see IS versions of the 400/5,6L and 100 f2.

i think we should be just thankful they still exist and at the price they do .

yes a 400 IS would be great but the im not sure the user base would be quite so thrilled by the doubling (at least) in the price .

as for the 100/2 (and the 85/1.8) Canon could quite easily have canned those a while back .

Agree with everyone else. The Tamron macro or the 100L macro are your best options. I doubt Canon has an IS 85mm on the development map. The 70-200 f2.8 IS covers that area for most people, and if they want more bokeh then the 85L/135L is for precisely that.

Well, to parallel with the other IS primes, the 85/1.8 could be improved significantly wide-open especially with respect to contrast, purple fringing could be eliminated with coatings and a tweaked optical formula could reduce the significant LoCA, and then you'd still have a small, light, fast short-telephoto prime that would be useful in lower light than either the 100L or 70-200/2.8L IS lenses.

The 100L is nice, it's it's a stop (or almost? I hate logarithms...) slower, and it's AF isn't lightening fast like the 85/1.8s, and the new IS prime trio.

For reference, I own the 24/2.8 IS, 85/1.8, and 100L.

I agree about the 85/1.8 - there's room for improvement. I sold mine for the Sigma 85 which is quite a bit nicer and gets me more the 85L look at half the price. Just not sure that Canon have it in their sights for a makeover. Have you tried the 100/2? It's meant to be good. It's small...

Fast lenses like the 50L and 85L have little need of IS since shot wide open in available light, they get high shutter speeds relative to their appropriate ISO. Outdoors in daylight or shade, it's a CPL or ND filter is sometimes needed to get in the shutter speed range. But starting around f/2.0, IS starts to become more needed and feasible. I do enjoy the new 35 IS very much and have shot it a fair amount wide open at low ISO with the IS going.

The 100/2.8L IS is one and a third stops slower than the 85/1.8 (it's powers of the square root of 2).
