p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D7100 vs. D7000 Buffer

The D7100 buffer (NEFs) is horribly small, even compared to that of the D7000s currently used. I suppose Nikon was cheap and used the same amount of RAM, without an increase for the larger file size.

I read in several online tests that the D7100 buffer writes are quite a bit faster. Is the D7100 fast enough for action and how do people cope with it compared to the D7000? What is the fastest SDxx card that makes any difference in the D7100? Thanks.

Imaging resource is a good site for buffer clearing times. The info they have for the D7100 is with a Sandisk 95MB/s card; the info for the D7000 is with a 30 MB/s card.

Waveform containing continuous shooting speeds that I posted when I got my D7100:

Thanks. Are those the lossy or lossless NEFs? What is the best compromise for the RAW mode?

I don't do lossy NEFs, so those are all lossless compressed.

I stick with 14-bit - I just don't really run into situations where I need much more than 3 fps for sustained bursts. I still can get quick bursts of higher speed and it flushes to the card pretty quickly.

May or may not work for your uses, I just thought the objective recordings might give you the information you need on the speed of the camera with a high speed SD card.

The D7000 with lossless RAW and no Distortion correction, is about 10 frames. The speed of the memory card won't matter much since the transfer speed is not any faster than 30mb/s.

Thanks for the replies. I suppose I can make it even a simpler question. For D7000->D7100 users, do you feel that the smaller buffer is made up for by the higher throughput? I was hoping for a D400 or something, but time is running out in a couple months.

I guess it mainly depends on your shooting style and subject matter. For soccer, the camera and particularly the buffer never gave me any issues. However, I rarely shoot more than 5 frames per peak action moment since that's usually how long interesting stuff take place in soccer, except rarely.

Of course some subjects might require higher FPS and buffer and for that I can adjust into shooting intermittent bursts. The IQ, ISO performance, features and AF are indeed second to none in the DX world.

I got mine for $850 and honestly for that amount it's hard for me to complain

For sports, I shoot cycling races. 10 frames are barely enough. I used to shoot with a 1dmarkIII with 2x the buffer size. Unfortunately, 10mp isn't cutting it for what I shoot. You have to consider the speed of the actions and your or camera focus errors. The larger the buffer size, the higher chances you can nail the shots balancing out all the other variables (focus errors, awkward subject movements, and opening/closing eyelids).

I had a 7000 here... and currently have a 7100 for the wife.

I found that the differences were negligible on the bursts comparison except on the 7100 with a very very fast card. I was able to get near the same amount, but the time on the continuous wait was considerably faster.. I mean noticeably.

I've never really cared for Nikon's use of buffer space and how it's been implemented in their systems. I was one of those people caught in owning 2 - D2x shells and having to opt for a "buffer upgrade".

short bursts work for my buddy, as long as you dont just rip on it and hit buffer wall you are fine for sports and wildlife
