First time using my 24" x 24" softbox outdoor with my speedlights.

A friend wanted some 1yr old portraits of her daughter.

Any suggestions are welcome. I think feedback is the best way to learn. The softbox was not on a lightstand. My wife actually held the bracket and I showed her where to point the light. She tried to keep the same distance and angle. Babies don't seem to sit in one place too long.

Thanks,
Ron

Howdy!

Everything I write here on FM is intended to help. Everything I write is in a truly friendly spirit and tone of voice.

Unfortunately, you can't hear my voice on this forum, and written comments can be easily misunderstood for tone and intent. That is why I prefer to speak with people on a phone call when giving them advice and giving critical opinions (critique) of their images. Otherwise, what is intended to help someone can be taken wrongly, and that defeats the purpose of the communication. And, because I want to avoid flaming and trolls, I tend to refrain from writing some things here that could be instrumental in helping someone improve, but may be taken out of context or misused by others. So, I limit my written comments here...though I am sure some will disagree on that last point.
___________

At a glance I like your use of light. I rarely say that with flash photos, so take that as a compliment or my way of telling you you did a good job.

That said, the photos appear a little "cool" in light temp to me. I prefer a warmer look and when I look at these they appear to me to be "flash photos." This is a subtle thing, but it shows in how the colors look (pink, yellow, skin).

Of these photos, the first image is the one I find most appealing because of the pose and look on the child's face.

That said, I would NEVER show the dirty bottom of a shoe pointing towards camera! Really spoils the photo for me (as a picky photographer). Imagine how much nicer that same shot would be if we could see her tiny little toes and little feet instead of that huge dirty sole of a plastic shoe!

In the other images, I saw the head bow and flowers as unnecessary distractions. And, the child is obviously looking at mom off camera. Those things, along with some "off" gestures and composition weaknesses make those images less appealing to me compared to image ONE.

I hope these comments help you and others.
