I'm not a sports shooter by any means but I stripped off my camo lens coat and took the 300II to the track. Here are a few shots from today's practice sessions. Shot from Grandstand 31 which is at the last S curve before the hairpin.

1) Alonso covered in flo-viz

2) Kimi Raikkonen

3) Sebastian Vettel

4) Blurred Red Bull

5) Blurred Ferrari

Well, I tried my hand at it today and I tried panning at 1/200 sec but didn't get sharp shots. Of course it was easier shooting at 1/1000 f2.8 getting clear shots but no motion blur. My first try at panning.

nice shots, have fun at the race tomorrow. My wife and I have gone to 3 f1 races when they were in Indy. We had a lot of fun and people watching was fun too. I found 1/100 to 1/200 for panning was about right for myself with a 300 lens. the slower you go, the less keepers, but when you do get a sharp one, it's real nice.

Thanks for the comments. The keeper rate was very low. I found usually I would have one sharp shot out of a 5-6 shot burst but sometimes not even one per burst. SS at around 1/200 was the sweet spot. Still gave good tire blur and a few keepers.

That's a relief to hear. I guess I had expected a higher keeper rate. Were those hand held or supported?

Definitely like all your shots. #3 is my fav of the set. Just curious as to why you would remove the camo lens coat? I'm sure it serves to protect the lens as well as camouflage.

These were handheld so that also contributed to the lack of sharp shots. I just didn't feel like lugging my monopod into the grandstands.

I removed it as I thought it looked a bit funny walking around at F1 with a camo lens. But you are right that the only reason I have it on is for protection but usually from sticks and twigs when I'm hiking around for wildlife.

Thanks ziggy, the blurred ones are probably not to many peoples' tastes.
