p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Fuji X100s?

I'm getting ready to go on vacation to San Francisco and I was looking to perhaps rent a camera for the trip. I rather not lug around my Canon 7D with lenses and I've unfortunately sold my Contax 645...so, that leaves me with a decision. I could either just use my iPhone and not be bothered documenting everything or I can rent a Fuji X100s and at least be more mobile.

I've seen the photos from the X100s and have been impressed, it looks like it handles colors especially skin tones well.

What does everything think? Any recommendations?

I like my X100s. Of course, if you rent one, you'll end up buying one...

I'd be about $100 into renting one for the course of the trip, but spending ten times that amount to own one really cuts into the trip and being able to do things...

I didn't say you'd have to buy it now.

On one battery and a 16gb card how many photo's should I be able to take, what battery life should I expect each day?

Battery life is one of its bugaboos....it's not long and the battery meter will show full then rapidly trend to empty within 20 shots.

I would rent 2 extra batteries minimum if you're going out all day with it.

It shouldn't be too bad, though, provided you turn off the rear LCD and use the OVF instead of the EVF. I know I get about 300 shots on one battery using my X-series cameras with eye sensor (so switching between EVF and rear screen). I'd imagine I'd get quite a bit more with just and OVF, but I don't have an X100s or X-Pro to test that.

Any benefit in going with a X-Pro1 or the like? What are the main differences, I do like being able to switch lenses...I'm a camera lens hoarder...

Just purchase a used X100 for $500 and if you don't like it, you can resell it after the trip for the same amount.

I'd take the x100s (it's all I take on my holidays!) and you can get 280-320 shots per battery if you leave the LCD off. I'd take 2-3 batteries.

It's good if you don't need fast AF. AF isn't that terrible but it'll be a big change coming from a 7D. It'll be a big change from fast AF and interchangeable to a slightly slower AF and a fixed lens.

I'm just about strictly video nowadays and really only shoot photos for fun. In fact I haven't shot a photo since I sold my Contax 645, which is a real shame but if I can't really shoot film I almost don't like shooting. Since it's a vacation I rather not have shooting be too much of a chore so digital makes sense. I do miss developing my own film though...

Anyway, since I do mostly video I'm always doing manual focusing so it's not a new thing. The camera itself would be however.

I hear the X100s is quite the upgrade over the X100, $500 I would almost justify but I feel like I might be somewhat grumpy getting the inferior model, even if it's not that inferior. I plan on purchasing some knock off batteries for $20 which is cheaper than renting one.

Any other suggestions?

If you do video the 100s isn't for you.

Strictly photos for the vacation. Getting ready to rent the x100s and buy two extra batteries.

Fujifilm video is about the worst in the industry. No one who is seriously interested in video gets an X100. It's a photographers camera, not video.

I travel all over the world with my X100 and do so with a single battery. If 400 shots per day is doable, so is a single battery.

Those of us shooting X100 or X100S might have forgotten the learning curve. OP would benefit from renting earlier than planned to get shots under the belt before going live on vacation.

I would recommend the X100s to anybody. I bought one of the first models made and have used it extensively. The photo quality is good for A3 prints even at higher ISO. It is small, light and unobtrusive. It doesn't attract the interest that my Canon 5D2 does which is good if you are out at night or in less desirable locations. The only problems I find are the battery indicator - this goes from showing max to flat battery with no intermediate stages. I always carry a spare battery as you get no warning that it's going to fail. That said however, I usually get a full day's shooting out of a battery. The video is not great either. I love the multi format option though, it's great being able to shoot a square format photo, I know you can crop but seeing the square format in the finder helps composition when shooting square. I love mine....

I always turn my X cameras off between taking photos. They 'start' faster than they 'wake up', and you don't have many 'button incidents'.
