Hi, can anyone recommend some good places, especially on the US east coast, to shoot abandoned structures and places? I hear about all of these great locations, and see some incredible photos, but a lot of them are illegal to visit and/or dangerous because of drug addicts and the like. Are there any good ghost towns or abandoned buildings on the east coast that are both legal and safe to visit and photograph?

Oh I know...I'd love to just go for it! But...the fact that some friends of mine keep running into meth addicts makes me hesitate, especially me being one girl going alone :P

I'm not concerned with the structures themselves though; I don't mind leaping and climbing and all that. I love exploring; I just want to make sure I don't get arrested. Or mugged. But I do have a lot of respect for those photographers who run around trying to dodge the cops to get the amazing shots!

Detroit.

And carry a 9mm (not a wide angel lens).

maybe I'll just stick to landscapes and people and admire the beautiful creepy abandoned location photography of others.

Seriously though, derelict urban settings are one thing but there must be some safe ghost towns and the like to visit!

Not sure what part of the East Coast your in put there must quite a few old lumber mills, small mining towns and other sites away from the larger cities. Look at old maps of the 50's along the old interstates. I'd highly recommend you take 1 or 2 people with you just for safety reasons, falls, twisted ankles, zombies, etc.

The south has quite a lot of this. Also, Detroit.
