I'm jealous you're at the Montreal GP this weekend! I'm going to Austin in November, but scheduling conflicts made Montreal this year not possible...first time in a long time I'm not in the hairpin....

I have a different seat every day so today I shot from Grandstand 31 which is the last S-curve before the hairpin and then I have a seat at the hairpin (#15) for tomorrow and then by the pits (#1) on Sunday. I keep looking at Austin but just haven't been able to make the schedule work.

Yes, I agree, this lens is really a superb performer.

I have not used a 2X TC on my 300mm lens but the 1.4X TC Mark III on that lens performs admirably, I would say. The first shot is the full frame shot using a lowly 7D at close to the MFD. I had other shots of this kara kara but I wanted to get some sort of self portrait on its eye. So, I cropped the eye area to get even closer, close enough to get what I wanted with the shot. Not a gallery shot but just for fun.

all superb shots.. but the penguin one is a killer & easily something I'd see in National Geographic

great variety of shots - if I had to guess from these shots, you love the lens & are very adept to finding uses for it =)

As soon as I got 300 f/2.8 IS MkII in January 2013, I went out with it on 1DX to check its fast AF tracking performance. No better test for 1DX/300 II combo than pijuns in head-on flight.
It became immediately obvious that combo exceeded anything I had owned and used before.
Here are a few of those test shots.

your best PIF shot probably beats my best ever BIF shot.. with that said, i'm going to go now.. (great work)

The MFD has also been improved on this lens from the ver 1 as well. It can do a maximum magnification of .18 (from .13 on the ver. 1). When using a 2x extender, the MM improves to a really nice .36. To put that into perspective, the 50mm 2.5 compact macro can do a .5 MM, the 100-400 a .20, and the 300mm f/4 IS can do a mm of .24 (without extenders or tubes)

Combine that with the 4 stop IS (up from 2 stops on the ver 1) and you have a heavy, but nice lens for shooting flowers, butterflies, dragonflies etc. There are obviously lighter lenses for this job, but I really appreciated the increased working distance when shooting this male Calico Pennant earlier this week.

A couple of shots with 1.4xTC MkIII which I haven't used much at all on the 300.
Here I followed a certain image vision, however, technically, and because my stunt birds were not willing to make repeat flights, the results were not quite what I had aimed for.

I'm loving this thread, great shots everyone

This thread is a real eye opener. Of all the SuperTeles it seems like the 300 f2.8L IS II with both the Mark III extenders and a few tubes would make for pretty versatile kit. Weight seems manageable as does price when compared to the f4 big whites, and IQ is outstanding.

Something to shoot for...well dream about a least

I almost always use it with a 1.4x or 2.0x extender.

How 'bout some field sports? In decent light it makes a dandy 400/4; don't know (yet) about the 2xIII. On the open-ended stadiums hereabouts w/ cycling (dashboard) lights it's a champ shooting from the end zone anywhere from the 30 on in; black of night backgrounds. Simple. Forgive the disfiguring crops, etc, posting on the net, a heavy drop seems like a simpleminded antidote to mischief.

Although I really kind of hate moon photos (let's be honest... all practically the same exact thing), I wanted an excuse to bring out the 300 and 2x III...

At f/7.1, ISO 200 and 1/100 SS.... 300+2x III
