The MFD has also been improved on this lens from the ver 1 as well. It can do a maximum magnification of .18 (from .13 on the ver. 1). When using a 2x extender, the MM improves to a really nice .36. To put that into perspective, the 50mm 2.5 compact macro can do a .5 MM, the 100-400 a .20, and the 300mm f/4 IS can do a mm of .24 (without extenders or tubes)
Combine that with the 4 stop IS (up from 2 stops on the ver 1) and you have a heavy, but nice lens for shooting flowers, butterflies, dragonflies etc. There are obviously lighter lenses for this job, but I really appreciated the increased working distance when shooting this male Calico Pennant earlier this week.
