p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 500II Foot

Hi guys,

I just ordered one of these puppies and I am looking for a new foot. On the V1 I had of the 500, I had a RRS low profile foot with an Acra clamp type machined right in (LCF-50 B). Is there something better or should I just go for the same brand foot?

Looking at BHphoto, there are quite a few options and I was looking for personal experience anyone might have.

PS: I shoot mostly handheld.

I have the JOBU design foot and like it quite a bit. IMO most are pretty similar.

Jobu is a bit lower profile than others, and that makes it a bit better too, particularly for handolding.

Thanks guys,

I was concerned with the profile (height) of the rrs foot. It seemed hugely tall!

Peter, can you still fit your hand between the food and lens?

I chose Jobu over RRS due to lower profile

Oh yes, still plenty of room there even when wearing thick winter mittens.
There is only one little imperfection in Jobu replacement feet: the bottom edge of the foot plate is not chamfered round enough, so it starts to feel rather sharp in hand after a while.
I fix that problem with a 3-4" section of polystyrene insulation tubing which I buy in 6 ft sections from my local hardware supply store......they are inexpensive and provide a long term supply of foot sleeves, since in use they get worn or lost. Of course, if one is wearing gloves, then those protective sleeves should not be needed.

Thanks Peter. I could just pop the foot in a mill and shave off that roughness!

If you haven't pulled the trigger yet, consider one of the 4gd feet. Don't think it's carried by B&H, but can be purchased directly from 4gd or from Naturescapes (I recommend the latter). There are two versions, a low profile and a very low profile. After trying the RRS foot (I purchased Peter's and then decided it was too high profile for me), I got both versions from 4gd. The very low one interferes with the reversed hood, but the low one is perfect...the reversed hood will slip just under the foot, there's plenty of space for even a gloved hand between the foot and the lens, and there's enough of a bevel to the edges so that it's comfortable to carry.

Hi Greg,

Do you have a link? I assume you mean 4th generation design? (4GD).

You're welcome.

I dunno, but it looks like it. You could ask them about it. The 4gn foot for my 300/2.8L IS is one piece.
