p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon 1 V3 nails the focus, tracking at 20 fps so does the D300s at 8 fps

I posted this thread on the Alternative Gear forum, I don't even know why, probably because my main gear now for general picture taking is the Olympus OM-D E-M1 with a few first class lenses.

However I am still a Nikon guy in heart as well, and still have the good old and very reliable D300s with a couple of lenses and the Nikon 1 V3 and a V2 bodies with 5 lenses. I just love the Nikon 1 system since the beginning starting with the V1, then the V2 and now the V3.

The V3 to me lives up to or exceeds my expectations and tracks moving animals like a dream at 20 fps. On the pictures below I tried the Oly E-M1 but the tracking failed miserably, so I continued with the V3 with the 30-110 lens and the D300s with my exceptionally good copy of 70-300mm.

Below you will see a couple pictures taken with the V3 and one with the D300s. Both worked fine and tracked the very fast moving Cheetahs at 50 mph with approx 95% in-focus results. Most of my pictures were shot with the V3 since the 20 fps has a big advantage selecting the picture taken at the right split of a second. Hope you enjoy them.

Very nice comparison Julius. Looks like they were shot using the same camera. I'm impressed with the Nikon 1 system.

The Nikon 1 still amazes me sometimes. Nice shots.

The key question, at what apertures were they used?

EXIF shows f/5.6 for all three shots.

Despite some of it's ergonomic foibles and high price, it looks like the V3 is a winner in decent light. Nice work Julius and thanks for posting.

I had no idea you had cheetahs in the central valley of California! These are great, the cameras performed really well.

They were all shot wide open at f/5.6 on both the V3 and the D300s

This is making me want one of these little babies ... Also would make a nice compact travel body. If only money grew on trees

I've never doubted the IQ from the Nikon 1 cameras. I use to own the P7000/P7700 and they were great cameras with even smaller sensors.

That being said had I not bought a Df I probably would have gotten a V3 but I am still waiting for Nikon to get more serious about the Nikon 1 system. Really if the V3 could use normal Nikon flashes I think they'd have a killer system.

Now if Nikon could put such goodies into a FX mirrorless body I'd be very happy . . .

Or a DX body with 24MP and a decent buffer!

It does grow on trees, the trick is 1st - locate the forest and 2nd - find the tree...& don't wait too long as you have climb up very high to the money branch, all yours for the picking.

Well f/5.6 on a CX sensor is like almost 2 stops more DOF over f/5.6 on the D300's DX sensor (assuming you're framing shots the same on both).......not saying it's not fast, but the added DOF does help...

So my question is should I get the V3. I have the V1 and V2. shoot mostly with V2 because of the grip but the V3 looks to be a more solid build with the addition of the moveable screen.

Might as well have zone focused

OT perhaps, but I own the V1 and have considered the V2 and V3, but other than the superior body and extra buttons (meaning better ergonomics), there doesn't seem to be much of a difference between them all when it comes to IQ. Yes, you get more pixels in the V2 & V3, but the extra pixels doesn't translate to better IQ. I just can't get excited about the newer versions...and personally refuse to pay the cost until Nikon can convince me they're worth it.
