Well I wanted a set, sort of, so I have the V1, V2, V3 and the AW-1. I liked the V1 right up until I got the V2. I like external controls on the V2 over the V1. My wife confiscated the V2 for herself and I have to hunt for it all the time so I bought the V3. Sounds like a good reason right?
The V3 has many upgrades over both previous models. Focusing being #1 in my book. FPS also. I have the CX VR 70-300 ordered for a fall trip this year with the V3. I shot some with the V2 last year using my 500/4 in Alaska and the results were pretty decent. My main bodies are the D4s and D800e for this trip but since the V3 is so small it becomes my point & shoot ++. I'll try out the AW1 as well, play with it under water should I get the chance.
All the V1 series really work well on my primes 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 85/1.4, 105/2.8 micro and 200/2. My fav being the 105 and 85. I've not used them much on my zooms.
So the short answer is the V3 is the best of the 3 models, V2 & V3 similar controls, the controls are important for me as I shoot 95% manual mode on all my cameras, IQ not much different from the V1, a tad better. The AW1 controls are quite different but understandable because of the type of camera it is.
There are the little quirks like not being able to turn off the review without being if the high speed mode, but like any camera I just consider them tools and come up with a work around if possible. I've printed 8x12's with V1 and 12x16 with the V2 but everything has to fall inline, online they look great. My baseline is the D800e so that makes a tough comparison.
Nikon almost got the V3 right but the V4 will be there. Find a good used V2 and you'll have almost the same as a V3 till the prices drop more. I saw how Thom slammed the V3 until he used one for awhile and now he has one in his bag all the time. I love the results of the V1 series for macro on my 105/2.8 the best.
Now about that gift certificate.....
