p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 1st Attempt at Rhythmic Gymnastics (Individual Competition)

I had the opportunity to shoot a competition a few weeks ago, as one of my friends (former Canadian senior team gymnast) was back to coach a new team participating in the Team Competition. here are some of my favourites from the Individual Competition portion of the day, shot with a 1DX & 85L, typically at f/1.8 and 1/1250s at ISO 2500 or so.. as I had no prior experience with this kind of subject, please feel free to offer your feedback/critiques - thank you in advance:

Nice shots but the background, and the school banner especially is really taking away from the shots.

Agree with Paul. Some fantastically timed shots here. Rhythmic gymnasts seem to be made of rubber and splits leaps beyond 180 degrees are far more common but they are always prized shots.

Shots without face rarely work although you do have a few here seem to break that general rule.

Overall, if you could have cleaned up your backgrounds, this would have been a stellar set.

Thanks for sharing!

Good photos, same general comments as the other regarding the background, but I am sure that some of the sponsors and the hosting university will prefer the images that show their brand... Gotta know who pays the bills!

It's not always easy to find clean backgrounds, one way is to move up and get more of the floor in the photos.

The colors really pop (looks like Ryerson really invested in good lighting in their arena!), but they are also a little over exposed for my taste.

Stellar timing...is the girl in #7 and #13 the same? Intriguing you got her in the same pose/timing if it is.

Thank you! I considered shooting from higher up, but I really hated the effect of making the gymnasts look like midgets.. Instead I got as low as possible to maximize the "air" they had, not sure exactly what the best practice in gymnastics would be..

Thank you Chris, yes - it's the same girl. These athletes were/are unbelievable for sure.

Thank you all for the feedback! If anyone could leave a few of their "favourites" that'd also be greatly appreciated,

I think shooting from low was the thing to do, even given the background - hard to avoid since there were spectators on the two sides and no-go zones on the other two (judges' line and divider).

Yes, I was there, on the finals the day after you were. It would have been nice to bump into you and share some notes!

If shooting from higher, I would try to go significantly higher, like the viewing level one floor up.

My faves here are #08 with the apparatus in the air, and #11. I really, really like your first shot posted on your blog.

I have to ask. Did you use the 1Dx AF Case 6, which was programmed with rhythmic gymnastics in mind? If so, it appears to have worked extremely well.

Ignoring backgrounds, #s 3, 7, and 13. Great shots with a high degree of difficulty, peak action, apparatus and face.

First off I never shot dance but I think your shots are super sharp. But I think some would look better from a different angle or possible timing....like maybe #4 - it's a nice frontal shot but then all you can see is her neck & chin in the head area. On #11 (and I hope I don't misspeak here) but her left leg look like an amputee. Also #14 where the arm is covering her face. And please note I don't speak to these in a harsh way....just offering what I see.

So I don't know what the rules of the road are for shooting dance but I would think some of the basic principles would still be there for the viewer to see the face or eyes or not see something that might be unflattering.

And for those I like...I think that #2, #3, #7, #13 are some of your best ones posted.

When I see this type of sport on TV....I believe they are competing on an elevated platform....and if that was the case you could have shot upward.... but here they are on the same level plane as you. Not sure if an elevated floor would have taken all of the BG distraction away....but I'm sure it would have helped some. I don't think there was much you could have done here with the BG's....colored bleachers.....banners on the wall. So you were pretty much at a disadvantage before you started.

Thank you for the feedback & the picks! Awesome that you were there for this event too.. For the AGG Four Continents Team Competition (main thing I was shooting), I was able to shoot directly from below the judges' table dead-center & so for those shots the colourful/busy backgrounds were avoided.. however, for the individual performers, I too think sitting as low as possible was the best possible option while shooting from the sides..

Yes indeed, Case 6 AF on the 1DX worked extremely well.. I tried leaving it on all AF points for a bit, but ended up opting for Single Point AF, expandable to adjacent AF points.

Thank you very much for the selections, always helpful to get that sort of feedback from other sets of fresh eyes. Much appreciated,

Thank you for the detailed feedback & the photo selections Frank! Don't ever worry about hurting my feelings, when I post my work I'm always only interested in the critical comments/viewpoints so that I can improve - my ego isn't a part of this in any way.

I too am very inexperienced when it comes to rhythmic gymnastics, so I had my friend (former Canadian Senior Team Competitor internationally) help me weed out the "bad" or unacceptable shots.. I can't even imagine selecting the final edits by myself if I hadn't had her help haha..
