I think shooting from low was the thing to do, even given the background - hard to avoid since there were spectators on the two sides and no-go zones on the other two (judges' line and divider).
Yes, I was there, on the finals the day after you were. It would have been nice to bump into you and share some notes!
If shooting from higher, I would try to go significantly higher, like the viewing level one floor up.
My faves here are #08 with the apparatus in the air, and #11. I really, really like your first shot posted on your blog....Show more →
Thank you for the feedback & the picks! Awesome that you were there for this event too.. For the AGG Four Continents Team Competition (main thing I was shooting), I was able to shoot directly from below the judges' table dead-center & so for those shots the colourful/busy backgrounds were avoided.. however, for the individual performers, I too think sitting as low as possible was the best possible option while shooting from the sides..

I have to ask. Did you use the 1Dx AF Case 6, which was programmed with rhythmic gymnastics in mind? If so, it appears to have worked extremely well.
Yes indeed, Case 6 AF on the 1DX worked extremely well.. I tried leaving it on all AF points for a bit, but ended up opting for Single Point AF, expandable to adjacent AF points.

Ignoring backgrounds, #s 3, 7, and 13. Great shots with a high degree of difficulty, peak action, apparatus and face.
Thank you very much for the selections, always helpful to get that sort of feedback from other sets of fresh eyes. Much appreciated,

First off I never shot dance but I think your shots are super sharp. But I think some would look better from a different angle or possible timing....like maybe #4 - it's a nice frontal shot but then all you can see is her neck & chin in the head area. On #11 (and I hope I don't misspeak here) but her left leg look like an amputee. Also #14 where the arm is covering her face. And please note I don't speak to these in a harsh way....just offering what I see.
So I don't know what the rules of the road are for shooting dance but I would think some of the basic principles would still be there for the viewer to see the face or eyes or not see something that might be unflattering.
And for those I like...I think that #2, #3, #7, #13 are some of your best ones posted.
When I see this type of sport on TV....I believe they are competing on an elevated platform....and if that was the case you could have shot upward.... but here they are on the same level plane as you. Not sure if an elevated floor would have taken all of the BG distraction away....but I'm sure it would have helped some. I don't think there was much you could have done here with the BG's....colored bleachers.....banners on the wall. So you were pretty much at a disadvantage before you started.

Thank you for the detailed feedback & the photo selections Frank! Don't ever worry about hurting my feelings, when I post my work I'm always only interested in the critical comments/viewpoints so that I can improve - my ego isn't a part of this in any way.
I too am very inexperienced when it comes to rhythmic gymnastics, so I had my friend (former Canadian Senior Team Competitor internationally) help me weed out the "bad" or unacceptable shots.. I can't even imagine selecting the final edits by myself if I hadn't had her help haha..
