p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Do you ever use OCF in a ceremony?

Some time ago, a photographer who I shoot for critiqued me for not using OCF because the ceremony was a bit dim. This person tends to prefer things to be a bit on the quasi-overexposed side, which kind of squashes any dark, romantic feel to some images. But since they're writing my check, I pay attention to their instructions & modify my technique accordingly.

So I find it somewhat amusing to read when some people jump up and down screaming that flash should NEVER be used under any circumstances during a ceremony. My thoughts on the subject are just like photography in general, IT JUST DEPENDS- in this case, on the client's desires, officiant's rules, etc.

Would love to hear other people's thoughts.

In a church ceremony, only once. It was on a stand bounced off the wall. At a private venue, pretty much all the time.

Generally my rule is absolutely not. However I did shoot in this one particularly bad church
With low ceilings and can lights and the light was just going to look awful for the poor bride. For that one I bounced flash to give better quality of light and I got the okay from the officiant beforehand.

I haven't. I attended a friend's wedding where the photographers used OCF during the ceremony and I found it incredibly distracting.

I can't even imagine getting a request like that from clients. Of course I've busted out the OCF for formals inside the church, but that's different.

Yes, all the time, but not in a church.

it, like everything else depends, though I generally don't. I have used it to get decent light on the procession.

Absolutely dependent on the situation but if needed, yeah!

For church ceremony, probably not. For a ceremony anywhere outside of a church, I wouldn't hesitate to use OCF if I think I need it.

Rarely, but I have a few times. One I can remember is a barn wedding where it wouldn't have been lit well if I didn't use it. Here is the situation. I can't imagine high ISO or bounce for this and making it look good...

morby, that does look good, but the lighting seems like it could have been quite intimate without flash. f4 @ ISO1600, doesn't sound like it was *that* dark? Anyway, I like your photo (even if I still wouldn't do it).

All depends, I try not to, but in a situation like Morby just posted, yeah, probably.

I think claiming vulgarity given the huge range of conditions under which a ceremony occurs is a bit harsh.

Indeed, it is harsh, apologies for that. There are a whole range of cultures out there and what is acceptable for some may be disgraceful for others.

For the type of "simple English weddings" I do, for me, it is vulgar. That is just my opinion, which I didn't put across very well (it wouldn't be the first time).

Some find any flash at all vulgar, but that's a much bigger question.

I don't recall that I ever have, but if it was allowed and the circumstances called for it, I would do it.

I can see flashing an outdoor daytime ceremony to fill in some shadows from the sun.

Or maybe if the couple were outdoors shaded under a tent and doing some flash there to keep the background from blowing out.
