I have been lucky enough to find many special places. It is really special to find a place where there is great scenery in every direction. Unfortunately there is a reason there were no other photographers at such a great location. Canyonlands is just TOOOO big. Photography just cannot capture the excitement when you look down hundreds of feet and the scenery extends for 20, 30 or even 50 miles or more. Anyway here are my attempts for this evening.

North (Deadhorse point is in the distance)

South - The Abajo or Blue Mountains

East - The Monti La Sal Mountains

West - more Canyonlands

Really like light on #4.
#3 is also great but PP seems too harsh, clouds lost their softness.

Good work, Jim. The clouds in #4 are the ones hanging around Hanksville (where I am) and the western parts of Canyonlands (where I've been Jeeping lately).

Thanks for all the comments.

Sasha, thanks for the suggestion on processing for the clouds over the La Sal's. I read you comment and tried to remember what processing I did. I sort of wondered what I had been thinking when I did the processing. Then today I saw the same cloud formations hanging over the Abajos. In person they really do look strange and menacing. Maybe I will try a reprocessing anyway.

I agree it's far easier to feel the grandeur while there 'in 3D' than to convey it via a process that flattens it all onto a screen or sheet of paper....and with the rest that #4 is the winner of the grouping though 2 & 3 may have promise. A place this remote isn't easy to gather in and capture without a lot of time.

Thanks for the motivation, I'll be spending Christmas in the GC and will plan to stretch my vacation a few extra days to backpack a bit in the Needles.
