p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Does this work in B&W????

I am a huge fan of classic B&W photography, but I typically don't like to see B&W photos that scream, "Let me see it in color!"

I have held this shot in color for good while, but I decided to give it a go in b&w. For me, the jury is still out...

So I ask you:

1) Does this shot work in b&w?
2) Does it leave you, the viewer, really wanting to see the color version instead?

Comments and thoughts appreciated...

Russ

Should we be seeing it in color? Are those boats beautiful shades of orange and blue etc? I think it works fine in black and white, but on my monitor, it looks a touch bright. The fog is interesting but maybe a bit less exposure and a bit less emphasis on the lights side of the curve would provide some additional depth and intrigue.

Perhaps...

I also toned down the highlights in the b&w and re-uploaded it above.

Ok, I prefer the black and white version as the orange boat dominates the frame in color. Hope that helps.

Russell, it was "made" to be black and white! I much prefer the monochrome here to the color version and frankly, did not need to see the color.

I agree with Douglas. The color has merit, but misty days are made for B&W.
The color emphasizes the boats, The B&W gives the scene an atmosphere that isn't as apparent as the color.

Agree with the above - BW. Maybe a little vignette to tone down the buoy? Or, if you're inclined, remove the buoy.

Regards,

Bob

BW is fine
Maybe burn down the dock a bit, or crop a tad from the left?

Congrats on a Great Shot: both work for me

The B&W sets a tone for the entire image: the fishing boat, boathouse and village dominate.

In color the oversize orange boat with it's battle scars dominates the foreground and makes the rest rest of image a background.

I really like this shot: either would display well. And maybe even better as a pair a few feet apart.

Definitely made for B&W, a lot more grit and contrast could be brought out in the boats and the wharf.

The texture of the grain in the dock is more interesting to me in B&W. I like this in color, but I prefer the B&W. It's so moody!

Thanks to all for the comments and compliments.

I appreciate your input. I am surprised the b&w was received as well as it was...

Definitely like it better in B&W! There are too many similar colors so I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to be focusing on. The big red boat definitely takes the attention in the beginning but then I second guess myself once i look at the building.

I like the color version. Different colors emphasize different objects.

Russell - I live up the street in Rockport and we see so many photos of the Motif in color. I think the B&W version is wonderful. It really gives a nice look with the fog coming in. I feel it more with the B&W. Since I sail out of Rockport Harbor I see the Motif alot. Red is fine but B&W still has a place.

The color image, for me, is boring, the BW has a good feel to it, especially with the fog.
I would try adding some vignetting maybe a slight contrast boost.

Well done!
