p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tamron 17-50mm f. 2.8

Hi guys.
Just got of the phone with a guy who saw that I was selling my Canon 17-85mm IS.

He offered to swap it for a Tamron 17-50mm f. 2.8.

Normally I'm not that big a fan of Tamron, only a selected few.

But haven't tried this one or heard anyone speak of it....

Anyone of you who can tell me something about it...?

Best regards
Mikael, Denmark

I'd be wondering why he wants to trade it for a lens such as the 17-85. Maybe it is a bad copy or defective? I'd rather have a Sigma in the fast normal zoom for EF-S category.

The VC (tamron's Stabilization), is not considered to be a very good lens (but neither is the 17-85), but the non stabilized one is said to be very very sharp and is a well regarded lens, I have read that it has pretty slow, and loud autofocus but is accurate.

I have the non stabilized version. It is a very good lens. Great value for what it costs. Not quite the canon 17-55 but pretty close.

I have that lens. Great for the price. Plus you get constant 2.8 compared to its canon counterpart. My only problem with it is the auto focusing noise (I have the non VC version)

The Canon counterpart to the Tamron would be the 17-55/2.8 IS.

I had the 1st, non stabilized version and it was a very sharp lens. the focusing is a bit loud, but not horrible. I replaced a canon 17-85 with mine and it was much better on sharpness. It's also very compact for being a f2.8 lens. I think the tamrons have a long warranty like 5 or 6 years also, but don't know how they handle change of ownership etc.

The original Tamron 17-50 2.8 is not that sharp wide open, but it gets much better stopped down. At 5.6 it is a sharp lens. It has quite a bit of chromatic aberration at the wide end, but it can be corrected in software.

Tamron has good service. I bought mine in 2006. In early 2012 when it was still under warranty (6 year warranty) the aperture blades started getting stuck and throwing an error on the camera body. You could shoot at any aperture zoomed out to 17-24, but beyond 24, anything other than 2.8 would cause an error and an overexposed photo.

I sent it to Tamron for warranty repair (copy of the receipt required) and it was fixed good as new in about a 10 day turnaround time. The 6 year warranty is fantastic, but the lens should not have failed in 5 years time. It was lightly used and never subjected to any drops, general rough handling, or harsh environments. Thanks to the Tamron warranty though, I still have a functional lens and not a useless paper weight.

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (older non VC version) is a very good lens and a definite step above your 17-85mm (though obviously smaller focal length range and no IS). For many years it was the primary choice for APS-C shooters who couldn't afford the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 or Nikon 17-55mm f2.8. Actually I would likely choose the Tamron over the Canikon versions even if price was not an issue as it is smaller and lighter and the performance difference is not huge.

Very nice lens for the value - I use it as my walkaround lens on my D7K. As said above, make sure it's the non-VC model.

The non-IS model is very good. Bit soft at f2.8, but by f4 it's golden. I'm pleased as punch with mine. Great DX lens.

I would do that trade in a heart beat (only if it's a good copy). I currently am trying to get rid of the Canon 17-85mm and no one will even buy it for $150, I may have to go down to $100 to get rid of it. I have the non-VC version, and like others have said, it's sharp, BUT it is noisy and in lower light has a hard time focusing.

If you do go through with this trade, make sure that the lens does not front or back focus when used with your body. Seemed to be a common issue with this lens and bodies that do not have MFA.

Um, you might want to check out Bryan Carnathan's review at The_Digital_Picture.com, who says:

"The optical quality of the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens is excellent (especially for the price). I find my images sharp even when wide open at f/2.8 at all focal lengths - I do not hesitate to use this lens at f/2.8. Narrowing the aperture 1 stop or so yields slightly sharper image centers and noticeably better corners as the corners are somewhat soft wide open."

I've had several copies of this fine little lens. The only problem I noticed is that on some older copies, perhaps "well-used", the front protective glass lens assembly can loosen and become noticeably wobbly. Several owners, including some on FM Buy & Sell, have mentioned this condition, always with the disclaimer "but it doesn't affect images". Um - the copy I had with a wobbly front lens definitely had image problems.

Check it out - might be a great deal. If it's in good condition and functions as it should, I'd trade 2 17-85's for it. Or it might be a piece of crap. But it's sure worth a good careful look.

OP-do me a favor and pm me his number...

Maybe he wants a second 17-85 IS?

I'll trade it for a lens cap or something else of equal value...

hahah...

Had this lens when I shot crop only and as others have said, quite sharp, very good IQ and half the price of the Canon counterpart. Only reason I don't still have mine is that I went FF and only use the 7D when I need more "reach".
