Hopefully someone can set me straight -- I'm playing with a new (to me) 1D IV and have a basic/ question. Is it not possible to set up both the AF-ON and AE-L buttons to invoke auto-focus?

I have the centre AF point "registered" and have C.Fn III-11 "Switch to registered AP point", set to 2, only while <*> is pressed. This allows me to use specific patterns of AF points (with expansion) on the AF-ON button, and then use the centre AF point only when pushing *.

I don't think you can set both buttons to have the same AF function, unless you have only the "registered" AF point selected for AF-ON use, as well as for *.

I think you can on the 1DX (which has the new menu) but reading page 227 in the manual of the 1D4 it looks as if you can only toggle to use one or the other
Maybe jcolwell's answer is just what you are looking for.
Don't have my 1D4 anymore, good luck.

You can do that on the 7D, but it has some extra options that were new at the time, e.g. the Q.

I picked the * button so that my thumb wasn't stuck in my eye all the time.

YMMV

Out of curiosity, why did you want two different buttons that close to each other doing the same thing? Do you have two people sharing the same body that preferred different buttons?

Left eye shooter (?), like me.

I was just trying to replicate how my 7D is set up. I suppose I should put some thought into what I actually use most of the time.

But thus far I find the AF-ON button slightly awkward to reach (with eye-poking potential) and the AE-L button seemed better. But then I noted that the AE-L button once set up for AF no longer allows me to zoom out while in image review.

What sense does it make to have it keep auto-focusing while in image review? No idea.

I assigned both buttons on the 7D, just in case. However, the * button is better located for me and that is what I use for AF on the 1 series bodies.
