Okay, I have read the instruction manual but I cannot find what I am doing wrong. I have a Vello Shutterboss and a Nero lightning trigger and they both behave the same. When they are plugged in to the camera, I lose the ability of the half press focus. The half press focuses and immediately fires upon focus? What if anything am I doing wrong. Any help would be great

It could be the focus assist is triggering it? Even if there is not focus assist pop up flash or Canon flash attached?

In any case, you can shift focus control to the back button which is much better overall. Not only would it probably solve this problem but a number of others too.

Is it a remote timer? Don't you mean remote release?

It doesn't matter, one is a lighting trigger and the other is a remote shutter release and I do not half half press focus lock on either.
