for me, either a Nokton 35mm 1.4 or a Color-Skopar 35mm 2
both are around 300-400 used, then an M adapter varies from 20-200$

Super Takumar 35/3.5 on M42 adapter
Nikon 35mm f2.5 Series E on Nikon Adapter

Both should be $50-ish for the lens. Both are solid, if slow, lenses.

Canon nFD 35/2 if you want the speed, nFD 28/2.8 if you're willing to give up a stop for the wider angle.

Cheap and good:

pick your preferred SLR mount and grab the appropriate 35/2, or for even less, the 35/2.8

however, I'd suggest you do the same, but not with 35, grab a 24 or 28 f/2.8

adapters on the bay run around 20USD. They are fine. Rainbow imaging ships very fast.

I'd prefer the 28/55 set to 35/55, myself.

Maybe some old Minolta rokkor lenses? The should be fairly cheap on ebay or in second hand stores and you only need a ~$20 adapter.

I do recall the nikon series E being super sharp lenses, I might go for that, thanks

I'm quite happy with my MC Rokkor SI 28/2.5 & FD SSC 24/2.8.

I have been testing a lot of options between 28-40 recently on the A7r. The best perforamance wise for the $$ thus far has been the Pentax K 28/3.5. It's much better than the M42 version (which I once owned) and is optically unique/ better only for the first K version (not anything later). One just sold for a little over $100 I noticed on the auction site. Given it's corner to corner performance on the A7r, I think it's worth much more as I doubt there is anything out there that will outperform it under 1K at 28mm's on the A7r (though I have not tried the above Minolta 28 yet as I need to reassemble it!).

Some other good options I have recently tried are the Contax 35/2.8 and the older Minolta 35/2.8's MC. The Contax is better of course (as it should be for around $300) but the Minoltas's can be had for like $20! and are more than decent one or two stops down. The later Minolta 35/2.8 MD last version is supposed to be really good but it's hard to find. The Konica AR 40/1.8 is very good as well - and cheap - but it's noticeably longer than the 35's and longer even to another 40mm I compared it with (the Minolta CLE Rokkor X 40) so I would pass on it if you need something noticeably wider than the 55. If you did not have the 55, I would recommend the amazing Leica Summicron R 50 and also the Konica AR 50/1.7 (an amazingly sharp lens on the A7r by F4/5.6).

I have tried a few 35/1.8 or F2 lenses and frankly the 2.8's perform much better unless you spend big bucks.

No, I have not. I could kick myself as I have a nFD 35/2 sitting on my shelf but without the mount (a lens I have owned since 1983 but took apart a few years back to modify...). That lens is definitely worth a try.

I don't know about the Olympus 35 options. I have been itching to try the OM 40 but it's a bit pricey.

If f/2.8 is fast enough for you, then the Minolta MC or MD Rokkor 35 or 28 f/2.8 or the MC Rokkor 28 f/2.5 can be had for about $50 and all three are quite decent performers stopped down. The 28 f/2.5 is a little bigger and doesn't focus as close but does have the wider aperture. If you wanted something with just a bit wider aperture the Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35 f/2.4 is a very nice lens that costs about $200 (and you could get a very cheap m42 mount adapter for it), and something with even a little wider aperture you could go for the Canon FD 35 f/2. Many people like that lens and seem to especially like this one:
http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/lens/fd/data/17-35/fd_35_2_sscv1.html

It seems to go for about the same price as the Zeiss Jena Flektogon.

As Tariq mentioned the Pentax K mount (just the plain K mount not the M or A series) 28mm f/3.5 seems to be excellent as well and quite cheap and the Olympus OM 28 f/3.5 is a complete steal often going for about $25. It is a very nice performer especially at that price. Good luck with your choice there are lots of good options.

Cheap (below and up to 100 USD) and good/very good wa lenses on the A7 from my collection:

24mm - Sigma 24/2.8

28mm - Rokkor MC/MD 28/2.8 and MC 28/2.5,Oly 28/3.5 and 28/2.8,Konica Hexanon AR 28/3.5,EBC Fujinon 28/3.5,Yashica ML 28/2.8,SMC Pentax M 28/3.5 and 28/2.8,Sigma Mini Wide Macro 28/2.8

35mm - MD W.Rokkor 35/2.8,OM Zuiko 35/2.8,Hexanon AR 35/2.8,Yashica ML 35/2.8,Pentax M 35/2.8

40mm - Hexanon AR 40/1.8

For twice as much your choice would be much broader.

If I had a 55mm, I would, as a second lens, pick a 28mm rather than a 35. Going to Europe with nothing wider than a 35 would leave me feeling somewhat restricted.
That said, I am using a number of Olympus on my A7R with great satisfaction. Their rendering is a welcome alternative to that of the Sony-Zeiss, which I also have.
There are 3 Olympus 28mm: f:3.5, quite a good lens indeed, should be less than 100€, f:2.8, slightly better, should be around 100€. I use a f:2.0, which I paid around 200€ for.
If you are fixed on 35mm, and willing to consider a finicky adapter, you could consider the Contax G 35 f:2.0. Very small, and, while not the best regarded of this great line of lenses, I have seen very good pictures indeed from it on a A7R.

They are fine. Most go a bit past infinity.

At 28mm most of the SLR f/2.8s are decent and dirt cheap.

If you can spend US 140ish, then look for a Kiron 28/2. That's the cheapest f/2 28, and it's pretty decent. Comes in a bunch of different mounts.

28/55 would be alot of fun

Here is the Kiron on the A7:

DSC06130 by unoh7, on Flickr

DSC04782 by unoh7, on Flickr

DSC06061-2 by unoh7, on Flickr

The Kiron is not huge, either and weighs 235 grams or so.

One last note, the Canon FDs and nFds will be the cheapest for good glass, but the mount is not great. However, in your case, the adapter will stay with one lens, so it's no big deal.

Looks like the other cheap mount is minolta (the Old one), here's a great 28 for 62USD
http://www.keh.com/camera/Minolta-Manual-Focus-Fixed-Focal-Length-Lenses/1/sku-MI060090134600?r=FE

And they have the "celtic" version for 25USD , but that 62USD lens is prolly just as good as the equivalent 170USD Nikon 2.8

Like others said: for Europe I would choose a 28mm rather than a 35mm. 24mm would even be better. The best quality/price ratio of all 28mm I know of has the Olympus 28 3.5.

Not particularly they tend to be nice small lens even with an adapter on. I've got a few 35mm F2.8, 58mm F1.4, 135mm F2.8 and I definitely prefer the colours they give compared to the Canon FD 50mm & Tokina FD 28mm F2.8 I have.

In general they're nice and small, well built with good colour and as Minolta no longer exists they tend to be fairly cheap to acquire. So you could probably pick one or two up for under a $100 as well as a couple of cheap adapters.

Plenty of example images in: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/924270/69

Minolta MD 35/2.8 is an outstanding lens that is dirt cheap, very small and very light. Minolta's MC 24/2.8 is a lot more expensive, but was so good that Leica rebranded it for their R series. Minolta had an older MC 28/2.5 with rare-earth element that can often be found quite cheap (under $100 from sellers who don't know what they have) that is also quite exceptional.
