p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · How to test IS on Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II ?

So I bought refurbished Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II from Canon.

How do I check that IS is working properly in a couple of weeks that I have to return it if it does not?

Thanks,
Michael

Make sure IS is on, set lens to 200mm, and set shutter to 1/25 -- which is 3 stops less than the rule of thumb minimum of 1/200 for a 200mm lens. Shoot several (10?) non-moving subjects handheld. Most, if not all, of your images should be sharp. Turn off IS and repeat. Most of your images should show motion blur.

Vary the above to test some more.... i.e. use an even slower shutter speed to test its and your limits.

Anything more scientific than that would require you to send the lens to Canon. If you are a CPS member, they will check this and a bunch of other stuff free as part of a Canon Maintenance Service.

Drink go to bed at 3am, get up at 6am, drink 5 cups of coffee before 7am and go out shooting. If anything is in focus, the IS is working

Simply look through the viewfinder at something at 200mm with IS off. Now do the same with it on.

You should be able to see the difference, as well as hear the IS start up.

If none of these work, you can use live view with magnification (5x or 10x) and turn IS on and off while you handhold at 200mm. This will also give you a greater appreciation for IS.

Thank you everyone!

I tried over weekend and did not hear obvious IS noise that I get from 70-300 f/4.0-5.6 IS
(the only other IS lens I have) and was not sure whether IS on 70-200 L is super silent compared to mine older non-L lens...

The 70-200 I just bought from Canon, so sending right away for checks does not make sense
I still have ~12 days to RMA it back

I will experiment more with static objects and slower shutters,
Michael

The IS in the 70-300 non-L is ancient, and extremely loud, though effective- I use it on a regular basis- and not to be compared with a modern Canon IS lens.

As others have said, it's pretty obvious whether the IS in the 70-200 is working just by hand holding at 200mm, looking through the viewfinder at something in the distance and switching it on. The world suddenly becomes calmer! All I ever hear are a few muted clicks and whirs every now and then.

The harder part would be to check mode-2 IS (for panning) is working as it should.

As others have noted, you can see the IS lock on by looking thru the viewfinder, then half pressing the shutter button for a few seconds. The image should stop moving around after about 1 second as the IS locks on. Its best seen at 200mm handheld, but not waving around, just hold it still, it will move enough to see when it locks on.

Hearing it operate is no guarantee that it works properly, but the image suddenly becoming stable tells you it works. I'm not sure how a person will determine if the 16-28mm f/4 IS is working.

I didn't realize you got it from Canon...... 99.99999% chance its just fine..... Bad refurbs are rare birds indeed.

Worse come to worse, you have a 1 year warranty which covers malfunctioning IS.

The same way- by breaking the 1/f rule. >1s shutter speeds should do the trick .

I wouldn't go quite that far... 3 stops down from 1/16 is 1/2 sec --

Exposures over 1 second are bound to show motion blur in spite of IS being healthy.... That said, I also like to see how far I can push things... but don't think its broken if a 1 second exposure is blurry.
