I got roped into covering a 10k race by a friend over the weekend. It was a bit of a learning experience, and if I do it again, there's certainly improvements I can make. In the main, though I was seriously impressed with how the D800 handled the lighting conditions (brutal sunlight). My recently USB dock "DOT" tuned 120-300 f/2.8 never faltered either. All shot in small, normal JPEG. SOOC with the exception of minor exposure tweaks (went a little under to protect highlights )

I am the the official photographer for the United States Sprint Boat Association and I'm here to tell you not only can an 800 do this but but has no problems acquiring, locking and tracking a 12' boat doing 0-100 mph in less than 3 seconds and pulling 5-7 gees in the turns.

My photos are being printed in a Swedish power boat magazine in a month or 2.

Typically a D800 with or without a TC17.

Thanks. The frame rate never limited me at all, and the AF was superb.

Thanks. Reckon he nailed the last hundred in about 11 seconds. You can see the sweat beads trailing behind him

Fantastic shots there. It's amazing what the D800 can do in the right hands. I do get tired of hearing that you can't use a body for sports/action unless it can do 10fps and has a buffer that can hold a gazillion frames. A decent body with good technique will yield more keepers than any pro sports camera with 'spray and pray' technique......

Thanks. I would have loved to play artistically with shutter speed, but for events like this, the organisers want pin-sharp motion freezing shutter speeds......
