I've always used foam pipe insulation taped in place with either camo tape or gaffers tape. Who makes a good padded leg cover these days?

I tried pipe insulation on my RRS TVC-34L, but that made the already-thick legs really huge, so I picked up some LensCoat LegCoat Wraps (http://www.lenscoat.com/legcoat-wraps-c-23_22.html). I like them a lot - just enough padding, easy to put on/take off, and they don't rotate around (they have some rubberized material on the interior).

+1... Got LensCoat leg wraps for our 34L, and like them.

its all relative to the load you are choosing shoulder carry. i use the optech leggings on mt TVC33. for heavier lenses i prefer them. everything to taste.

Go down to your local bike shop and get some handlebar tape. Does a great job and looks neat.

I picked up some old lenscoat leg coats (were made for Gitzo 1325) and fit them to my GT3540LS. Theyre a bit bulky, but theyre easily removable so I can pull them off if I'm not planning on carrying them very far.

I also have the Leg Coats, though on two legs of my 3 series Gitzo. The padding really helps with a heavy setup. I always leave one leg free for easier carrying of the collapsed tripod.

I used these Manfrotto zip-on ones for my Gitzo and it was tough going. It was kinda too small in diameter, but I persevered. Reminded me of when I was zipping up a ten year old tuxedo after I'd put too much weight on.

From the FAQ page on www.LensCoat.com

What is the difference between LegCoat Covers and LegCoat Wraps?

Both products protect your tripod legs and your shoulders when carrying your gear. They also both act as a thermal barrier keeping your hands comfortable in hot or cold conditions.

The main differences are bulk and how they go on. The LegCoat Covers have a closed cell foam core about 1/2" thick with a slit down the side and a 2mm neoprene shell that wraps around the foam and has a Velcro closure. The foam also comes with an optional adhesive strip to help prevent movement.

The LegCoat Wrap is less bulky and is made from approximately 5mm of soft spongy neoprene that wraps around the tripod leg and is affixed with a Velcro closure. The Wraps backing is designed to tightly grip to your tripod legs so they will not slide.

Due to the construction and shape the Wraps are less expensive to ship compared to the LegCoat Covers especially internationally.

Thanks for the input. I guess my biggest problem is the wad made by the velcro used to attach the pad. Tape and pipe insulation is uniform.

I made my own using my old wetsuit(7mm thick) with contact cement.
You'll need sharp rotary cutter to make a clean cut.

Works just as well and feel a bit better on my shoulder.

I hardly notice it. Place the seams on the inside.
