just too clarify – the nikkor 105/2.5 ltm is a different beast than the pre AI 105/2.5. the ltm costs around $100-$400 more these days (depending on condition, cosmetic style, and seller). optically the ltm version is the same as certain early versions of F mount but the design changed at from a sonnar to a double gauss at some point prior to the AI versions release. i'd have to look up exactly when that transition took place.

Sorry, yes, of course you are right. The ltm completely different and is more desirable than my early F-mount version, to which I was referring in my post, but if I am not mistaken (please correct me), they share the same optical formula.

Pre 1971 by most accounts, the optical formula F mount was a sonnar...

These pages also shed some light...

I seem to have the early 5/3 Sonnar, it says nikkor p-auto 10.5. Photos for reference and size on N7.

LTM version, I'm assuming its the S mount one for Nikon rangefinder? That's what I came across when I was looking that up

the ltm version is the same optically as the s-mount version but comes in leica screw mount (obviously) and focuses in the correct (canon/leica direction) and is more expensive while the s-mount one focuses the wrong direction (nikon/pentax direction ).

ahhh interesting. thanks for the info. LTM one seems rather hard to find, guess that's why its more expensive. I did pick up an S-mount one so we'll see how that goes

Here are a few from the CY Zeiss 85 Sonnar AEG on the A7r wide open at F2.8. Rather nice rendering imo - and crazy sharp as well.

100% crop from above, default sharpening in ACR:

does anybody use the SAL-85F28 85mm F2.8 SAM ?
maybe on a A7x?
is it like the zeiss c/y?
no...or?

The Sony 85/2.8 SAM is the same optical design as the CY 85 Sonnar but it does not have the noticeably better T* multicoating (it is, after all, sold as a budget lens). I owned the SAM back when I shot the Sony a900 and while it was very sharp, it lacks the color rendering and microcontrast/Pop of the CY.

I also noticed in the post directly below yours that the linked test includes a Rollei 85/2.8 Sonnar. Interestingly, this is a different design than the CY (The Rollei is a simple 4 element design vs the 5 element CY design) and, at least for the copy tested in that link, it is nowhere near as sharp wide open as the CY version.

85 full frame or 85 equivalent? I personally think my Fuji 56/1.2 (85ish equivalent) is as good as my Canon 85/1.2, only it focuses a lot faster.....

Two other great options are the 75 Cron AA and 75 Lux. Both work amazingly well with the A7 series, and are light and ergonomic.
