I had forgotten about this thread. Not that I posted much in it but it was fun to follow.
I had to really dig for this thread, finally going outside FM to a search engine. This thread was in the archives section, so searching the Alternative section, alone, had been unsuccessful. I was trying to decide whether to buy a locally-available Elmarit-M 28mm version III, a locally-available version IV, which is not a Mandler design, or another of several 28mm M lens options. I decided to go for the local Elmarit version III, which happened to be the least-expensive, due to having no hood, and a correct, but cracked, round cap, though the lens, itself, looks pristine. (Collectability is the least of my concerns.)
I reckoned that if I want to use a modern, “perfect” 28mm, well, I have a Nikkor 28/1.4E, which I can use on a D850, so it makes sense for my Leica M 28mm lenses to have some character, the designer’s signature.
I now have two Mandler lenses, a pre-APO/pre-ASPH Summicron-M 50mm, and my just-acquired, Canadian-made Elmarit-M 28mm version III. The Summicron has the IV/V glass, but is a 50-Jahre Special Edition, so cosmetically neither IV nor V. (Fiftieth anniversary of the 50mm Summicron.)
