Canon EF-S 1018mm f/4.55.6 IS Image Samples
Canon China posted the first sample images from the Canon EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens.

It's an incredible deal for $299 and the first images and MTF chart look encouraging.

Pre-order:
Canon EF-S 1018mm f/4.55.6 IS STM for APS-C sensor ($299)

Interesting choice for a new lens given how good the 10-22mm is in both size and IQ.

The new 10-18 is made for the low end DSLR video market, no?

I assume it's meant to sell Rebels... and it's something to look forward to with the T6i/SL2, hopefully supporting upgraded DPAF sensors comparable to what Canon is dropping into the C100's.

I wonder if we'll be able to pop the plastic bayonet off the back of this lens and use it on APS-H or FF. The 10-22 allowed this for 13-22/16-22. This would make for a really cheap equivalent 16-23 with IS on APS-H or 16-18 on FF.

I love the 40 and have been looking for a wide zoom, so I figured at 299 I'd give this one a try. I suspect it will do just fine on my 7d or t4i. Now how it will do on my 7d2, i guess we must continue to wait!

I still don't understand why we always get ripped off! $299 converted to UK pounds plus 20% VAT is less than 218, yet once again $299 is 299 here. C'mon Canon, is it any wonder there is so much grey market stuff in the country?

Yeah, but that's what the 20% tax is for. I doubt very much that Canon are taking the extra and giving it all for social security!

If they are employing anyone in the UK then they are paying national insurance etc for them, and have stronger labour obligations than in the US. Import taxes are possibly also higher, and they may also be subject to higher business rates (and maybe even higher salaries) than in the US.

That said, i agree that it is hard to see how the prices are fair, but in the case of Canon they do actually have to maintain a supply chain cos they are selling physical goods. It's the software companies' pricing i can't see an excuse for - no physical presence required (web distribution), no translation required (the UK can tolerate US English ), no local support services needed either (international phone calls to a cheap labour country). Why does that get direct dollar to pound conversion?

jumped on one for my EOS M while traveling and 40D IR - Missed my 10-22 but this will work! The 14 Rokinon was never wide enough with the those 2 Same its not an M mount, but then i couldnt use on IR... And it has threads so the 16-35 can be regulated to the 5DIII with this and an 89 filter on it!
