Yeah, but that's what the 20% tax is for. I doubt very much that Canon are taking the extra and giving it all for social security!
If they are employing anyone in the UK then they are paying national insurance etc for them, and have stronger labour obligations than in the US. Import taxes are possibly also higher, and they may also be subject to higher business rates (and maybe even higher salaries) than in the US.
That said, i agree that it is hard to see how the prices are fair, but in the case of Canon they do actually have to maintain a supply chain cos they are selling physical goods. It's the software companies' pricing i can't see an excuse for - no physical presence required (web distribution), no translation required (the UK can tolerate US English ), no local support services needed either (international phone calls to a cheap labour country). Why does that get direct dollar to pound conversion?
