You could also get a refurb D800 and 50/1.8G and learn to be a great photographer without the distractions of always having the wrong lens on the camera. In terms of "getting better" I believe this would be better than bogging yourself down trying to cover every focal length while overlooking how to find and make good photos....

I would go with a used D600 for $1200 and spend the $1300 on MANUAL FOCUS NIKON GLASS. That'll get you a lot of glass!

Its surprising how much I use this combo even with some of the nice glass in my set. I am sure that will change a bit when my sigma 35 get here later this week.

This is my actual kit:

+++

Nikon D7100 refurb: $800

Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS (VR): $355

Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS (VR): $680

Lexar 600x SD Cards, 32 GB, 4: $64

Total: $1,899

+++

Note that those two Sigma lenses are rated as the sharpest "standard zoom" (at 14 MP) and "telephoto zoom" (at 17 MP) on the D7100 according to DxO tests. They are incredible bargains when compared to the other lenses of similar sharpness.

For example, the 50-150 is rated at higher sharpness than the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR II, although not by a lot (17 MP vs. 15 MP). But it certainly is a lot cheaper! I paid $680 for a used one in mint condition, versus about $1,750 to $1,850 used for the 70-200 II. About the cost of my whole DX kit!

For a FX kit I would go with a used Nikon D800 or D800e at a bit under $2,000. Plus the Nikon 24-70 used at $1,300 and the Nikon 70-200 II used at $1,750. Total cost $5,000.

Cheers!
Michael
