p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Shooting a media event, Which lens to rent?

Ill be shooting a graduation with a throw of about 90 feet from where I will be to the speakers. I will be using a D3, D200, and my 24-70. I am goin to rent a telephoto, and was going to go with the 70-200, probably on the D200, but something tells me it wont be long enough to really get some good closeups. I don't have much experience with longer focal lengths so I'm not sure exactly what i should go with.. Will the 70-200 be long enough with slight cropping?

Rent a 300 f2.8 for your D3, putting the zoom on your D200...should git 'er done.

when I shoot graduation, I use one body with a 24-70 and the other body with a 70-200 f2.8. A 300 f2.8 is too bulky to move around the area for me and not flexible enough to get the various shots that arise. I concentrate on speakers, getting the diplomas/awards and the pro/recessionals.

Well I will be confined to the press box, so I know I won't be roaming around. I would have the 300 on my monopod and the 24-70 hanging. I want to make sure I can get in close, since President Obama is speaking. <- pretty excited about that!

Do you think i would be better off getting the 70-200 with a 1.4tc instead, that way i have plenty of room to play with?

You'll get (slightly) better iq with the prime, but lose the flexibility of zooming. How about hiring a 7100 to put the 70-200 on, giving you that extra reach you are thinking you may need, and keep the 24-70 on the D3?

90ft with a 200mm ain't gonna be enough to fill the frame well.

If you want flexibility, rent a 200-400.

I shot a high school prom event and used my D800. I am always amazed how much I can crop a pic when I don't have enough lens reach.

Just a thought?

Will the lighting be enough that the D200 will even be usable? Most graduations I have attended were either outside at night, or indoors in crappy lighting. D200 ISO is so limited.

When I shoot graduations I use three lenses. 200MM F2 with or without 1.4 TC, 70-200MM F2.8 and 24-70MM F2.8 with a pair of D4 cameras.

I understand you do not own a D800.

Maybe rent a D800? Huge sensor provides for a lot of cropping and it has great ISO.

You might also think about renting a 200 f/2.0 VR. This is my go to lens for high school events. F/2.0 is nice to have if the lighting sucks. And I often slap a 1.4x or 1.7x on it (light permitting) if I need reach.

Lot's to think about.

The 70-200 VR will be perfect.

I know so many options! i think im going to go with the 70-200. It will be outdoors middday so there should be plenty of light.

The event is outside during the day in a stadium, enough light shouldnt be an issue. The 200 f2 would be nice but i would like to keep the capability of a zoom.

The 70-200mm will be long enough on the D200. You can always crop later. The 80-400mm is another rental option and by all means use a zoom lens. A fixed focal length lens is the worst choice for event photography.

Just remember, the 70-200 on the D200 will fill the frame with a person. On the D3, if my math is right, you'll have a frame about 6-8' wide at 90ft; no where near frame filling.

It's the president, I'm by no means a fan, but I'd still want to fill the frame with him. I still say 200-400.

I think the new 80-400 is a better option than the 200-400 as its a lot lighter and less bulky. Put that on the D3 and you'll have most individual shots covered regardless of the range, and keep the 24-70 on the D200 for close-ups and group shots.

Since your event is outside in daylight I suggest putting a 1.4x on your 70-200 f/2.8.

It is very sharp and the extra reach will be nice. Here's a simple shot from a game I shot this weekend.

D700 w/70-200 VR2 & 1.4x
