p.1 #1 · Problem with 580 EX-II (Re-post)

I have posted the same in Canon forum but thought I would ask for help here too.

I have a 580 EX-II which does not seem to work on 'ANY" rechargeable batteries. I have tried Eneloops, Imedion, PowerEx & Duracells. (Both freshly charged and new ones charged)

It works with a regular AA batteries but can only do less than 4 flashes per 4 batteries.

Anybody have had this problem ? Is it toast ?

I'd check with Canon. My 580EX and EXII's all work with PowerEx or anything else I put in them.

I called Canon and it seems the min charges start at $150. No t sure if it is worth now. But just swing for a new one.

I'd have it repaired at $150! It'll come back as a new flash...

I have burned up two 580II flash units and don't think repairs are anywhere as good as a new unit. When they start to die they will kill batteries fast, making you think you might have forgot to charge them. Also the light output will be OK then over bright ( only shoot manual so it should be constant). Then they die. Have had repairs at Canon and United camera ( said had to be sent to canon but saved a good amount having them do it). None have lasted as long as a new unit. In fact I think under a year and I am not using any more then when new, in fact less. KEH list $135.00 flat repair fee which I might try as I have 2 burned out just collecting dust right now.

You might also want to check your camera hot shoe plate. Some models get loose inside and need to be tightened to allow contact with the flash. Many video clips on YouTube about it. Usually does not hurt the batteries, just the flash output.
